In my youth and into my old age I have been burdened by you
if only you were as enamored of me as I am of you.
If only you had felt for me as I feel for you

I kept vigil for you through the pleasant nights,
I stayed up for you, the pleasant nights
my long-lashed eyes watching the star.
Watching the star, my love sick heart wanders

And for you I composed the first songs
and of you I sang them beneath the roofed shelter.
And for you I sang them under the roof

And I lamented much in longing for you,
And I increased my passionate longing for you
and because of me the lovelorn man multiplies his laments.
As the lovesick increases their lament for the beloved

And from my passion, passions were ignited
of you, though before me they were not enamored.
For you in hearts that before had no passion

وجزت مهالكاً تيهاً قذوفه
I boarded ships upon the sea to reach you,
I sailed the turbulent seas to reach you
and crossed deadly, trackless, far-flung wastes.
Crossing perilous waves tossed to and fro

And how many a desolate land I crossed—
How many barren lands I crossed
its fearsome seas leading the camel-chant astray [uncertain meaning].
Where the lost wander fearful seas

I joined one trackless wilderness to another,
I reached Tanuf wandering lost to lost
toward it, a wilderness like the sky [verb unclear].
To it like the sky I sailed around Tanuf

فكيف أطيق يا ليلى وداعاً

وداعي الحب حملني صنوفه
How then, O Layla, can I bear a farewell,
So how can I bear farewell O Layla
when love's summons has made me bear its many forms?
When the farewell of love has burdened me with its kinds
