والذكر أقعدني لكم وأقامني
My longing for you, despite your distance, has driven me mad.
My longing for you made me obsess
And remembrance of you has made me sit and rise.
And memories kept me seated, fixated

حتى أرق قلوب حساد الضنى
وبكىand wept فأعذرنيthen excused me بكمfor you منwhoever لامنيblamed me
وبكى فأعذرني بكم من لامني
Until it softened the hearts of those who envied my wasting sickness,
Until the jealous hearts ached
and whoever blamed me wept, then excused me for loving you.
And those who blamed me wept, so pardon me

So I became [thinner?] than the letters of my writing,
Thus I became softer than my writing
and whoever beheld me prayed for mercy upon me.
And those who cursed me prayed for mercy on me

As for me, heartache for you has subjected me to torment.
I am willing to bear suffering for your love
Who would rebuke me when it torments me?
Who can rebuke me for willingly bearing it

O Khatir, the thought of farewell has come to my heart
Oh thoughts that grazed farewell on my mind
to you; however long it lasts within me, it has not [unclear].
For you, as long as life remains in me

And indeed I choked on my tears at parting from you,
I shed tears at our separation
and love for you made me break my fast and oppressed me.
And love made me fast, though it weakened me

They said, 'We see you have become hunchbacked and gray-haired.'
They said you’ve become hunchbacked and gray
I said, '[Parting] from those I love has turned me gray.'
I said parting made so, for those we love

They said forget your love before him
Far from it! What struck me surpasses that one's affliction.
Never! Above that tragedy, this tragedy befell me

I am the lovers' candle in the fire of passion,
I am a candle of lovers in the fire of passion
and I see that passion has melted me more than flame.
I see the fire above the flames melting me

When the caller of passion called, I answered him,
When love's caller called and I responded
and I called to him in his wake, and he answered me.
And called him in return, he answered me

Who can prevent what has possessed me?

Nothing troubled me but a reproacher who had not tasted [it];
None has given me unrest but a coquette
his reproach showed me what I had tasted of it.
Who never tasted the agony he gave me

Else her love would have left me bare

Refuge, fearing what could confuse me
