وسمعكand your hearing مستكstopped up وطرفكand your gaze ساهinattentive
My brother, my son, why is your heart heedless?
My brother and my son, why is your heart distraught?
And your hearing stopped up, and your gaze inattentive?
Your hearing is deaf, your gaze distracted, your tears flowing down your cheek hardened.
ودمعكand your tears عنfrom تخديدfurrowing خدكyour cheek جامدfrozen
ودَمعand the tears الَّذيof the one who يخشىfears المهيمنthe Guardian ماهflowing
And your tears stay frozen instead of furrowing your cheek,
And the tears feared by the Almighty, what are they?
While the tears of one who fears the Guardian flow.
Don't you have the wisdom to guide your mind, obeyed and clear in its thoughts?
أَماdo you not لكhave منfrom تدبيرguidance عقلكyour reason آمرone who commands
مطاعobeyed ومنand from تقريرsettled judgment فكركyour thought ناهone who forbids
Have you not, through your reason's guidance, one who commands,
You are well-versed in the traditions and prohibitions,
Who is obeyed—and through your thought's judgment, one who forbids?
In the Quranic texts, consensus - so how did you go astray?
وأَنتand you خبيرwell versed بالرواياتin transmitted accounts والنهىand reason
وبالنصand in the authoritative text والاجماعand consensus كيفhow تواهdeeply astray
Yet you are versed in transmitted accounts and reason,
Your youth has passed, oh regretful one, and the first signs of old age have come,
And in the authoritative text and consensus—how are you so lost?
And these dark nights are misfortunes, and their events are calamities.
شبابكyour youth ياO دهمانDahman ولىhas departed وأَقبلتand have arrived
طلائعthe vanguard شيبof gray hair والعرامand youthful wildness فواfaded (uncertain)
Your youth, Dahman, has departed, and there have arrived
I see you boasting, unlike what you are.
The vanguard of gray hair; youthful wildness [has faded?].
Do you accept to be equal to them in deeds?
وهذيand these اللياليnights الغبرdust-dark فهيso they are جوادعmutilators
وأحداثهاand their events المستبهضاتcrushing دواهcalamities
And these dust-dark nights are mutilators,
Boast like the masters of knowledge when you are one of them,
And their crushing events are calamities.
When the generous call you their peer, then boast.
أَراكI see you تباهيyou vie in glory غيرother than منthose أنتyou منهمare among them
أَترضىare you content سواهمwith others than them فيin الفعالdeeds تضاهيto emulate
I see you vying in glory with those outside your own ranks;
You have the noble house as a sanctuary,
Are you content to emulate others in your deeds?
You, you are the ultimate scholar.
فضاهيso emulate ولاةthe masters العلمof learning إِذsince أَنتyou منهمare one of them
قمينworthy بشرواكwith those like you الكرامthe noble تباهيyou vie in glory
Then emulate the masters of learning, since you are one of them;
Obey me, obey your Master privately and openly,
You are worthy to vie in glory with noble men like yourself.
To gain the merit of the best that remains while you live.
وأَنتَand you لكyours is البيتthe house الشريفnoble مقدساheld sacred
وأَنتand you فأَنتthen you العالمthe scholar المتناهيconsummate
And yours is the noble house, held sacred,
If knowledge is not born of wisdom and chastity,
And you—you are the consummate scholar.
It will end in humiliation and much disgrace.
أَطعنيobey me أَطعobey مولاكyour Lord سراin secret وجهرةand openly
تنلyou will attain فضلabundance خيرof good ماas long as بقيتyou live وجاهand honor
Obey me: obey your Lord in secret and openly;
There is no good in a life that came through hypocrisy
You will gain abundant good and honor as long as you live.
And malice returning, and changing faces.
إِذاif العلمknowledge لمnot يولدis born بحلمwith forbearance وعفةand chastity
إِلىto الذلabasement مرجوعreturned وطولand prolongation of مناهits hopes
If knowledge is not born with forbearance and chastity,
You don't own anyone's soul but your own, so guide it
It is brought back to abasement and protracted hopes.
To the path of salvation after its tribulations.

وحقدand rancor أَعادof enemies والوجوهand the faces صواهparched
And there is no good in a life arising from fearful caution,
Salvage the end of your life with repentance,
And enemies' rancor, while faces are parched.
Before the final separation and sorrowful parting.
ومالكand you have no نفسsoul غيرother than نفسكyour own soul فاهدهاso guide it

إِلىto منهجthe path التخليصof deliverance بعدafter تناهdesisting
You have no soul but your own, so guide it
My advice to you, oh regretful one, is sincere,
To the path of deliverance, after desisting.
And you are compliant to advice and wise.

Redeem the latter part of your life with repentance,
I love you and God knows my love for you,
Just before the cries of 'Alas!' at parting, and 'Ah!'
And God did not neglect or forget the boaster.
محضتكI sincerely gave you ياO دهمانDahman منيfrom me نصيحةcounsel
وأَنتand you عَلىin طوعwilling obedience to النصيحةcounsel زاهproud
I have given you, Dahman, my sincere advice,
If I unveiled my inner secrets, you would be to me
And you take pride in willingly heeding counsel.
Like Qais to the slave girl of Mina.
أَودّكI love you والباريand the Creator بوديكof my love for you عالمaware
وماand not اللَهGod ساهheedless لاno ولاnor المتساهيone feigning heedlessness
I love you, and the Creator knows my love for you;
I advised you out of sincerity, and even if I am ignorant,
God is not heedless—no, nor does He feign heedlessness.
My advice would still be that of a sincere advisor.
وإِنكand indeed you عنديwith me لوif كشفتwere revealed سرائريmy innermost feelings

And indeed, with me—were my innermost feelings revealed—
My sermon awakens every heedless one, and even if I am not mindful,
You hold a place like Qays's with Abd Manah.
I am the one heedless of heedlessness.

لكنتI would be بنهييby my own prohibitions ناصحاًa counselor متناهself-restraining
I have counseled you sincerely; were I wise myself,
So long have I spent my life in vain, by God!
I would be a counselor restrained by my own prohibitions.
A prisoner of youthful folly, friend of frivolity.

إِذاif لمnot يكنthere is لاهيa heedless one أَناI المتلاهيone seeking diversion
My admonition awakens every heedless one; as for me,
If my ear hears passion it listens,
If there is no heedless one, I am the one seeking diversion.
And wretched is the man who listens to his passion.

Oh, how long I have spent my life aimlessly,
If my own sermon does not admonish me, advising one like me is folly,
A captive of passionate longings, an ally of amusements.
What folly to advise one like me!
إِذاwhen سمعتhears أَذنيmy ear الهَواdesire هيit صغتinclines لهاtoward it

Whenever my ear hears desire, it inclines toward it,
It is the soul that disobeyed me, and my heart obeyed it,
Wretched is the man who listens to the voice of his desire.
As my tongue obeyed my lips.

سفاهfolly علىin مثليone like me وأَيand what سفاهfolly

And if admonishing those I admonish does not admonish me,
So you who seek the path of integrity, away from misery
That is folly in one like me—and what folly!
And the path of misery is difficult and has no integrity,
هيit is النفسthe soul عاصتنيdefied me وقلبيand my heart أَطاعهاobeyed it

It is the soul that defied me, and my heart obeyed it,
My God and my worshipped one, your affection is mercy
Just as lips have obeyed the tongue.
And enable my efforts to please you, my God.

O seeker of the path of [deliverance?] from misery,
If my fear increases, fear increases my desire,
The path of misery is rugged and is not [deliverance?].
And if my remembrance of You increases, so does my fervor.
إِلهيmy God ومعبوديand the One I worship حنانيكYour repeated compassion رحمةmercy

My God and the One I worship, I beg Your tender mercy,
I accept the decree of fate and its judgment,
And success for my efforts to please You, my God.
Over my discernment in my conduct and afflictions.

When I grow more fearful, fear increases my longing,
And if my remembrance of You grows, so does my ardor.

And I am indeed content with destiny and its decree,
For all my discernment of my conduct and its trials.
