حبيباً به أضحى كئيبا كما أمسى
Layla reminds me—and one possessed by love does not forget—
Layla remembers me, and one who loves never forgets
of a beloved for whom I spend the morning downcast, just as I did the evening.
A beloved for whose sake he is sorrowful by morning as by evening.
فلوand if أنthat ليI had نفسينtwo souls نفساًone soul جعلتهاI would assign it
فلو أن لي نفسين نفساً جعلتها

لليلى ولي أبقيت مدخراً نفسا
If only I had two souls: one I would give
And if I had two souls, one I would give
to Layla, and one I would keep in reserve for myself.
To Layla, and keep a soul in reserve for myself.

My wish is that, so long as I live and endure,
And my wish is that, as long as I live, I should never cease
I never cease to be a saddlecloth at her tent posts, O passerby.
Ever to remain a mat at her dwelling's corners, O visitor.

Even if God decrees that I forget, indeed I—
And even if God decrees forgetfulness, I shall indeed
will wear smooth the earth’s road by journeying toward her.
Wear down the earth's path in seeking her.

I shall brave the surging sea, and at another time
I shall venture upon the vast sea, and at times
ride a strong, full-grown she-camel along her road.
Ride the vigorous, sturdy she-camel along the road to her.

I shall wear the robes of pitch-dark nights down to the dust,
And I shall wear the robes of dark nights down to the soil,
and in broad daylight make the earth’s cold my clothing.
And at forenoon make the earth's mantle my garment.

At forenoon I shall make the saddles of swift Mahri camels
And I shall make the saddles of Mahri camels, at forenoon,
the place I turn to, and at evening make them my lodging.
My resort, and at evening make them my evening lodging.

Whenever I seek union with her—woe to them, woe!

Shall I stay away from Layla in a dwelling, as though I
before death I had entered the grave because of its narrowness?
Had settled in the grave just before death, so cramped is it?

Shall I be content to accept Oman as my dwelling,
when I find there neither charm nor companionship for me?
When I have found there neither charm nor roots of my own?

I thought its inhabitants people like those who had gone before,
but found them neither jinn nor humankind.
But I found them neither jinn nor human beings.

When summoned, they are deaf; when they call, dumb;
Deaf when called upon, and mute when they call out;
if they speak, tongue-tied, and if prompted to speak, mute.
And if they speak, inarticulate; if addressed, speechless.

Save a few among them; and the person endowed with reason

Welcome, letter! A thought from you has visited me—
And welcome to a letter that visited me—a passing guest from you!
one who had begrudged me sent a letter across our separation.
And who can give me a dear friend who sends a letter from afar?

And through you it was companionship for me, despite your distance.
