تحملbears عاتقيmy shoulder ماwhat لاnot أطيقI can endure
It is fitting, if I weep blood—fitting indeed.
It is true that if I weep blood, it is true
My shoulder bears what I cannot endure:
My shoulders bear more than I can stand
ذنوباًsins لوif بهاwith them ألقيتI were cast down ميتاًdead
تحامتنيwould shun me القشاعمthe old vultures والأنوقand the Egyptian vulture
Sins such that, were I cast down dead bearing them,
Sins, if I were to die from their weight
The old vultures and the Egyptian vulture would shun me.
I would be shredded by vipers and cobras
ولوand if سلمىSalma أقلbore البعضa portion منهاof them
تهدمwould crumble منfrom ذراهits heights وهوthough it is نيقa lofty peak
And if Salma bore even a portion of them,
Even if the smallest portion were forgiven
It would crumble from its heights, lofty peak though it is.
It would destroy those of delicate build

ذنوبيmy sins راحwould become وهوand it would be بهاin them غريقdrowned
Or if over the encircling ocean flowed
Or if my sins were cast into the vast ocean
My sins, it would itself be drowned in them.
It would drown, sunk by their weight
ولوand if لفحتthey scorched صعوداًSaʿud وهوthough it were ثلجٌsnow

And if they scorched Saʿud, though it were snow,
If my sins blew upwards onto ice
It would become a source from which fierce winds blow.
The ice would melt away from their heat
فكيفso how بأننيgiven that I am بشرa human being سويٌّwell-formed
وأصليand my origin مضغةa morsel of flesh ودمand blood عليقclotted
How, then, can I endure, a well-formed human being,
How can I, a normal human,
When my origin is a morsel of flesh and clotted blood?
Born of a clot of blood and sperm
عجيباًhow astonishing ماwhat تهدare shattered بهby it الرواسيthe steadfast mountains
وتحملهand carry it المفاصلthe joints والعروقand the veins
How astonishing: what lays the steadfast mountains low,
Withstand what shakes the pillars
Yet joints and veins carry it!
And fills the joints and veins?

أناI am المأسورthe captive بالذنبby sin الطليقthe unfettered one
I am the living one who has died while alive.
I am the living one who died alive
I am the captive of sin, yet unfettered.
I am the captive of freed sin
أناI am السكرانthe drunken one منfrom صهباred wine ذنوبٍsins
وسكرانand one drunk on الذنوبsins متىwhen يفيقwill sober up
I am drunk on the red wine of sins.
I am drunk on a wine of sins
And when will one drunk on sins sober up?
And when will the drunkard awake?

وعندand at الشيبgray hair ينفسقfalls away الفسوقwickedness
They say there is wickedness in youth,
They say youth is wantonness
And when hair turns gray, wickedness falls away.
And wantonness cracks with old age

وعندand at الشيبgray hair لاno طبعtemperament طفوقimpulsive
And with gray hair, admonitions offer sound counsel,
And old age brings moralizing
And in gray-haired age, no temperament remains impulsive.
Yet in old age, nature is immutable

أتوقI arouse longing للهوىfor passion منthose who لاdo not يتوقlong
I see myself—though gray hair has already overtaken me—
Yet here I am, with grey hair upon me
Rousing to passion those who feel no longing.
Yearning for passion like the passionless
وهاand here أناI صرتhave become عوداًan old camel أيwhat an عودold camel

And here I have become an old camel—what an old camel!
Now I am like aged wood, oh aged wood!
Yet my morals and instincts are three-year-old camels.
My morals and nature are rights

In years I am a youth of fifty; my dispositions
A fifty year old with the ways
Are a girl of twenty, whose constant habit is shamelessness.
Of a twittering twenty year old

So gathering ill-gotten gains has become my concern,
So I've made my goal collecting trifles
And that is a catapult into ruin.
For that is the catapult of the feeble

And from my private pleasures, from my eating and drinking,
I do not awaken from my lifestyle
My clothing and my diversions, I never sober up.
My food, drink, clothes, leisure and more

Oh, grant pardon and help me do right, my God!
Oh God, forgive me and guide me
For the cord of my hope in You is made firm through You.
For my hope's rope is tied to You
