حتىuntil متىwhen أَناI حيalive بينamong أَمواتthe dead
منهاsome of them دفنتI buried ومنهاand some of them نقلcarried away لماتيmy locks
How long shall I live among the dead?
How long will I live among the dead,
Some I buried; others—my locks—were carried away.
Among whom I was buried and for whom my death was transferred?
مذsince ماتdied شعريَmy hair ماتتdied قوتيmy strength معهwith it
وأَدبرتand departed عندat أَضراسيmy molars ملذاتيmy pleasures
Since my hair died, my strength has died with it.
Since my poetry died, my strength died with it,
And along with my molars, my pleasures departed.
And my pleasures faded away in my teeth.

ففارقتنيso left me لفرقاهنbecause of parting from them راحاتيmy comforts
They came to be handled in turn by my palms in the dust.
My comforts rot with it in the soil,
So, at parting from them, my comforts parted from me.
So they parted from me, parting my comforts.
كنthey were الجنودthe troops التيthat ذلwas humbled العزيزthe mighty بهاthrough them
وليand to me أَطاعobeyed بهاthrough them المستصعبthe intractable العاتيthe defiant
They were the troops through which the mighty were humbled,
They were armies that disgraced the glorious
And through them the stubborn, defiant one obeyed me.
And made the stubborn tyrant obey.
قدindeed كانwas ثغريmy mouth بهin it سمطانtwo strands منof دررpearls
سلكانtwo strings عاداbecame خلياتempty عرياتbare
Once my mouth held two strands of pearls:
My mouth once held pearls of precious words
Two strings that have become empty and bare.
That threaded the beads of eloquent speech.
لاno سلوةsolace بعدafter أَضراسيmy molars ولاand no فرحjoy
ولاand no لذاذةpleasure عيشاتways of living أَوor اجاراتrentals (sense unclear)
After the loss of my molars, no solace and no joy,
But now there is no solace beyond my teeth, no joy,
Nor pleasure in living or in rentals [sense unclear].
No sweetness of living or neighbors.
مذwhen كنthey were there كنتI was فصيحاًeloquent غيرnot ذيhaving لثغa lisp
مذsince بنَّthey departed بانتdeparted غرانيقthe cranes الفصاحاتof eloquence
When they were there, I was eloquent, without a lisp;
Ever since I was eloquent, flawless in speech,
Since they departed, the cranes of eloquence have departed.
The cranes of eloquence formed.
فالطاءso the letter ṭāʾ والضادand the letter ḍād والراءاتand the rāʾ sounds قدhave سلبتbeen taken away
منيfrom me فرعياًin derivative form (wording unclear) لطاءاتيfor my ṭāʾ sounds وراءاتيand my rāʾ sounds
So ṭāʾ, ḍād, and the rāʾ sounds have been taken
The T, D and R's have been taken from me
From me, in derivative form, for my ṭāʾs and rāʾs [wording unclear].
Along with the wing beats of my swallows and gazelles.

And I have given the throat letters in exchange,
And I gave the throat letters compensation
Within the folds of qāf, kāfs, and mīms.
By folding Q, K and M's.
بعضيpart of me مضىhas gone وبقىand remains بعضيpart of me فواso alas أَسفاmy sorrow
بمنfor those who مضىhave gone ليتif only شعريmy knowing بالبقياتabout what remains
Part of me has gone, and part remains—alas, my sorrow
Some of me passed away, and some remained, but alas
For those that have gone! Would that I knew about what remains.
For those who left—if only my remnants knew!
ولاand not عجيباًa wonder منfrom الأَيامthe days إِنif فعلتthey have done

And it is no wonder if the days have dealt
It is no wonder that days have done this to me,
With me thus, for they are the mothers of marvels.
For they are the slayers of wonders.
أَماas for العجائبthe wonders منيfrom me بعدafter ذاthis فإِذاthen if

أَمنتI felt safe منafter بعدهاthem وقعthe impact of المنياتthe deaths
But what would be strange in me after this is if
As for wonders from me beyond this, if
I felt safe thereafter from the blows of death.
I live after them, death's strokes will befall me.

مغلثmixing الفعلconduct عصياناdisobedience بطاعاتيwith my acts of obedience
How long shall I be neither at war nor at peace,
How long will I be neither at war nor peace,
Mixing, in my deeds, disobedience with my acts of obedience?
Muddled in deed, obeying and disobeying?

The fire-stick of sins has gone on, never turning back
The drunk of sin continues unrepentant,
From them; with hopes I keep postponing my acts of repentance.
While I foolishly hope for my repentance.

My own self, Iblis, and the world are the enemies; so, O
Myself, Iblis and the hostile world—oh would that
My Lord, Your pardon and divine aid are my defenses.
Your pardon and success might assist me!

Enable me, Allah, to perform deeds that please You.
Enable me, O God, to do deeds that please You,
Your pleasure, O Allah, O my Master, is my pleasure.
Your good pleasure, my Master, being my own.

So let Your eyes guard me against Iblis,
So keep Your eyes vigilant over Iblis guarding me
And protect me from the evil of my own self and worldly things.
And protect me from my soul’s and the world’s evil.
