Farewell, O Arafat; God suffices me.

A farewell toward reunion, not severance and dispersal.

O Arafat, our company was gathered together.

And we stand before you in groups, with our intentions.

May the Creator bring us back to you in the coming year.

And from us, bounds, then things to come [wording unclear].

    Farewell stirred within our hearts,

the morning we parted, the anguish of sighs.

And every lover, at parting from his beloved,

has sorrows followed by more sorrows.

    For lovers’ hearts remain

in love, while their bodies are separated.

And every raven caws of separation,

and every bliss is followed by hardships.

At farewell, the ardent lover’s heart burns

more fiercely when tears stream from him.

Parting cannot be undone in the way

an erring offender’s missteps are forgiven.

May God keep you, keep you, O our place of standing,

at whose farewell spiritual merits are hoped for.

Nor have I forgotten the morning of farewell at Jamʿ,

when sorrows gathered within me there.

Nor the highest Sacred Landmark in the valley of Muhassab,

and the draughts I swallowed from the valley of Masr.

And O night when we attained the heart’s wishes from Mina,

and sweet were a noonday rest there and a night’s lodging.

And how often you made us stand at a station pleasing to God,

when the Jamarat had been pelted after midmorning.

Stations where God is pleased with our standing—

can you find, then, other stations like them?

I bid them farewell, my eye expressing my thanks in tears,

as though, at parting from them, I were a bereaved mother.

O Provider for the fledgling whose skin is [apparently] bare

of plumage, and whose movements are not yet steady.

And O You who, whenever called upon to dispel distress,

such troubles are dispelled by His grace amid hardships.

I called upon You grieving, and came to You hopeful.

May my prayers to You not go unanswered.

So grant forgiveness, kindness, and bounty,

O You whose favor and gifts I have received.

And accept my rites, my Hajj, and my ʿumrah,

and my visit to him through whom the ʿumrahs are adorned.

And do not send me back disappointed from before Your door,

for my prayers to You are both aloud and hushed.

If You are not there for me, in whose shade shall I take refuge

when sorrows follow one another at the place of standing?
