فلاthen no بدescape ليfor me منfrom حكمةwisdom ومقاصدand aims
فلا بد لي من حكمة ومقاصد
Whenever my soul prevails, it makes straight for you;
If my soul succeeds in its purposeful quest for you,
for I cannot do without wisdom and purpose.
Then I cannot do without wisdom and aims.

Though thoughts may arise from me while you are absent,
Even if you were absent from me, Khatir,
you remain with me, faithfully kept before my sight.
For, in my fidelity, you are present before my eyes.

Remembrance of you has never ceased to drive me toward meeting you,
So remembrance of you has never ceased to drive me to meet you,
nor love of you to guide me toward remembering you.
And love for you has never ceased to guide me to remembrance of you.

I see you with my eyes and heart while awake;
I see you with my eyes and heart when awake,
and if I sleep, a phantom of you guides me in slumber.
And if I sleep, a vision of you guides me in slumber.

Observe one person's affection for another—what appears
And a person's pure affection for another is what appears
before your eye in plain sight, or in dreams.
To your eye in plain sight, or in places of sleep.

When devotion is truly pure, love is one,
When sincerity is pure, love is one,
though the days may be of many kinds.
Even if the days are not all of one kind.

Is it a thought that has never ceased to dwell within my mind?
O Khatir, you have never ceased to dwell in my thoughts,
Concerning you, indeed, I have bound my convictions well.
And concerning you, I have indeed bound my convictions well.

In the purest state of my abiding apart from you—and God is witness—
In my purest sojourn away from you—God is witness—
I seem, in my distress, to lie within a hunter's grasp.
I seem, in my distress, to be in a hunter's palm.

My longing for Layla has stirred within my heart
And my longing for Layla has stirred in my lifeblood
a blazing ember of passion and remembrance.
A fire-kindler's ember, born of yearning and remembrance.

I wish that I might sleep—perhaps, perhaps
I wish I could sleep—perhaps, perhaps—
a phantom of hers might visit me late at night.
A vision of her might visit me at the end of night.

I hunger for Layla and thirst; indeed,
I hunger for Layla and thirst, and truly I
I yearn for her like she-camels bereft of their young.
Yearn for her like she-camels bereft of their calves.

And if God decrees safe passage, I shall visit her,
And if God ordains safety, I shall visit her,
if good fortune in her regard proves my ally.
If fortune's favor helps me in this.
