Be gentle with yourself and patient, for patience is praiseworthy.

You will find it so; this remembrance renews sorrows.

Do not grieve over something whose attainment has eluded you,

for anguish kills, and recollection brings sleeplessness.

Were sorrow to pervade a boulder, it would shatter it.

    Boulders could never withstand sorrow.

does wailing help, nor does one laid in the grave return.

For the steadfast of heart does not weep for another, nor

does wealth distract him, nor does a newborn make him proud.

And one of firm judgment sees through the eye of certainty

that he exists apart from the dense throng.

    مناك باليأس في دنياك معقود

    Do not clutch at a cord of hope amid your aspirations;

your wishes, in your world, are knotted with despair.

And if you lose a loved one from his familiar haunts,

then know that after the loss you too will be lost.

For what is gained from the days is reclaimed,

and what is borrowed of life's years is returned.

And man, while he lives—while life has not tired of him—

his very core is a target for the arrows of death.

    وفيه حوض وذاك الحوض مورود

    And death is a gate, and all people enter it;

within it is a pool, and to that pool all come.

Truly fortunate is a child who dies without having earned

worldly gain by his hands, while prohibition is kept from him.
