This is grief such that no grief can equal it,

For the loss of a mind betrayed by madness and feebleness.

How strange: alive, yet I mourn him as dead,

Buried—yet far from it: no grave has held his body.

It is the sword; the crown of the head and the heart are its sheath.

When the keen blade breaks, the sheath is of no use.

When reason leaves the body, the body is but a form,

Abandoned by judgment, hearing, speech, and thought.

Men say, 'You are valiant and sensible,'

Yet the description that emerges is the opposite of what they say.

And does a rational man seek out sin just as

The tribe's guide scouts for pasture after the rain clouds pour?

If reason does not lead you to learning and piety,

It is the greatest evidence against you for what you commit.

I am the one who deliberately dares sin against God,

Far be it! No human or jinn is my like.

People see in me what a beholder other than God sees,

And the worst of a man's deeds is a truce tainted by rancor.

    I say, 'I love God'—I am indeed a liar,

And here is proof for one who harbors rancor within:

For if I were truthful in what I said of love,

Then no eyelid of mine would savor sleep instead of union with Him.

For every lover seeks solitude with his beloved,

And the tears of his weeping pour down his cheek.

    تؤلمه عنه إلى قربه يدنو

    He communes, hoping for his beloved's tenderness;

Distance from him pains him; he draws near to him.

And I, whenever night lets down its curtains,

Withdraw alone; there with the Beloved I have my sorrow.

I sleep on beds of wishes, and there visits me

A vision of the world, bending tenderly over me in its finery.

And I awake, like one distraught in heart and eye,

Over it, with one preoccupation of mine succeeding another.

Not so is one sincerely devoted to God,

Nor does a bondslave serve his master in this fashion.

    I have joined my gray-haired age to youth in aimless living;

So this is that one's guide, and that is this one's in-law.

I have no resource, no power or strength,

Except through Him to whom I owe bounty and favor.

If He guides me, I follow guidance; if He leads me astray,

I go astray; yet my expectation of Him is a good one.

When I fear You, O God my Lord, I

Surely hope for fear's opposite: safety from You for me.

    And through my sin I have become caught in its bond;

May Your pardon, O God, be the means to ransom the hostage.

May breezes of kindness from You blow upon me,

So my foul deeds may strut with a sweet fragrance.

So my gaze looks toward the lights of Your kindness,

And my ear has inclined to the caller of Your good pleasure.

And across the sea of my hopes toward You have sailed

The ships, hoping to make harbor in Your good pleasure.

If I measure my sin, it is a mountain peak; yet

Your pardon has a vastness no mountain peak can match.

If my soul attains Your pardon, my Creator,

Then loss will leave it on a day filled with loss.

So grant me what I have hoped of You, for I

Surely hope in You; no weakness abases one who hopes in You.

Yours are bounty and favor, unmatched

By any bounty or favor in any state of the two worlds.

    Bless Your chosen servant, Muhammad,

As long as hard-driven white camels make for Layla,

And his radiant, blessed companions; indeed,

Theirs are merit in Islam, good fortune, and blessing.
