No one attains glory who does not take as his means

Sleek, full-grown steeds, al-Khatt’s tawny lances, and swords.

Nor does anyone sleep with eyes at peace except a youth

Who, seeing a scheming foe’s venture, rides into it.

Nor does he quench his heart’s thirst born of rancor,

Even as he drinks deeply of his enemies’ blood.

Whoever fails to heed prudence bites his hand in remorse,

And attainment of what he sought has already eluded him.

Whoever compels his soul, against its will, to face peril,

And makes God arbiter in what He decrees, prevails.

Whoever strains his soul to reach the heights—

His soul gains honor; he fears neither humiliation nor weariness.
