for my mother and the son of my full brother.

And, O my soul's sorrows, do not come

one after another, with sighing and gasping.

  3. ويا كبدي بنار الحزن ذوبي

O my liver, melt in the fire of grief,

and, O my soul, breathe your last from longing for them.

for I shall not recover from my weeping.

drowned in the waters of his eye's tear ducts?

yearning to reach those he loves?

How strange that people should reproach me,

though in grief they have not walked my road.

    أعز عليّ من بيض الأنوق

They do not know that my elusive patience

is harder for me to find than an Egyptian vulture's eggs.

I have not told my soul, 'O soul, taste!'
