A vision of Layla keeps me company throughout my night,

toying with my heart at times, and jesting.

A vision from Layla maintains a steadfast bond

of union; meeting draws me away, though it is distant.

My soul be your ransom, O visiting phantom

of Layla—and for Layla my eye cries out, kept far from her.

And who will grant me Layla? She, Layla, is my desire.

Before reaching her lie deserts and lofty, towering peaks.

My heart is torn with longing for Layla’s landmarks,

and tears pour over the burning heat of its wounds.

Whenever Layla is mentioned, I am all tongues,

and they praise her as long as remembrance lasts.

And when they speak of her, I am all ears,

drawing deeply from the sweetness of her delicious remembrance.

And when they behold Layla, I am all eyes,

toward the beauty of her appearance—humankind, the gravelly valleys [wording unclear].

May God preserve, between me and Mina’s gravelly valleys,

the encounters that made those valleys appear to me among humankind.

And I have a watering ground in her meadow, and grazing places.

Long has my longing grown whenever lightning flashes

from the west, kindled by a scorching wind from the east.

Do not increase the lover’s longing by speaking of her,

for every vessel seeps with what it holds.

I yearn for Layla, near or far,

as thirsty camels, watered every fifth day, yearn with heads raised.

And if I hear the refrain of my image, a circling one [wording unclear],

the branches sway with it, while they sing.

My two friends, why linger here? Whoever is content

with it turns away from earning praise.

None wards off great calamity or attains the goal—

by your fortune—except riders pressing onward.

They traveled secretly in the heart of night, and by morning

the [incomplete word] billows around them, swimming over the deserts.

My two friends, I have a heart turned toward Layla,

and an eye that watches whenever lightning gleams.

Our recollection of Wadi al-Aqiq is like hers:

there the tribe settled, and the light swam.

And as long as I live, I love none but Layla,

nor do I praise anyone but God and the Pure One.

For a trader in anything besides God loses,

and a trader in Him and the Pure One gains.

    O Merciful One, O God, hear a sinner’s plea,

a penitent’s; and You are God, generous with pardon.

My sins, when I ponder them, are great,

but Your pardon effaces them, and in secret You forgive.

By the sanctity of our master, the Prophet Muhammad,

I ask You for success; whoever calls upon You succeeds.

Upon him be a blessing from You, visiting with mercy,

greeting him at evening through Your kindness, then clasping his hand.
