لهfor him الحزنgrief حياalive وهوwhile he فيin ظلمةthe darkness of اللحدthe tomb
I console you for a dead man; within me there still remains
I console you for a dead man who has not stopped being with me
a living grief for him, while he lies in the tomb's darkness.
Grief for him is alive while he is in the darkness of the grave

علىover فقدهthe loss of him ما(adverbial particle) بينناamong us أحرقتhave scorched كبديmy liver
And how can there be consolation for him, when the fires of grief
And how is there condolence for him, while the fires of his sorrow
at his loss from our midst have scorched my liver?
For his loss burned my liver between us
فإِنيfor I أَخذتhave taken السهمthe share وافin full منof الأَسىsorrow
وقدرand the measure الأَسىof sorrow عنديfor me علىaccording to قدرthe measure الودof affection
For I have taken a full share of sorrow,
For I have taken a piercing arrow of grief
and my sorrow is measured by the measure of my love.
And the extent of grief with me is equal to the extent of love

He is the dead man who grieved at the loss of his son;
He is the dead grieved over the loss of his son
ah, mercy on the departed for that bereavement!
So, O mercy of the one missed by that loss

فماتso died المفدّىthe ransomed one راغمabased الأَنفthe nose والمفديand the ransomer
He wished his son might be ransomed from his doom;
He wished he could ransom his son with his gown
yet the ransomed died, his nose in the dust—and the ransomer too.
So the ransomed one died, the nose and the ransomer being broken

And if death accepted ransom from those able to offer it,
And if death would accept ransom from ransom givers
Anushirwan would have been ransomed with his kingdom and troops.
Anushirwan would ransom the king and the army with the kingdom

And our Master the Prophet did not die, while around him
his Adnanites and the sons of Azd offered to ransom him.
They ransom him, the reins and the sons of Azd

He lay in the earth; death accepted no ransom,
He rested in the ground, death did not accept a ransom
however many men of eminence might be offered in his stead.
It doubles from him from the foremost benefactors

May God's blessings be upon him, living and dead.
Upon him, the prayers of God, alive and dead
He is the chosen guide; through him and for his sake the guided find their way.
He is the Chosen One, guided by him and the one who guides to him

Take comfort, sons of Abd al-Salam, for weeping
Condolences to the sons of Abdel Salam, so what is crying
over Nasir or his son will do you no good.
Over Nasser or his son bringing you glory

For mountain goats have found no refuge on a towering peak
So the lofty did not adhere to the high rooted tree
from death, nor a lioness within her thicket.
From death or the courage of the lion in its madness

Nor has Azrael feared anyone of awesome majesty,
And Azrael did not fear one with awe
nor shown mercy to the infant nestled in its cradle.
And did not have mercy on the infant cradled in the cradle
فحظfor the share وضيعof one lowly القدرin status فيin المَوتdeath قسمةas an allotment
كحظis like the share رفيعof one exalted الشأنin standing بالجدthrough fortune والجدand striving
For the portion allotted in death to one of low estate
So the share of the lowly fate in death is a distribution
equals that of one raised high by fortune and striving.
Like the share of the high ranked in nobility and ancestry

The fortunate man's end is a pit in the earth,
The outcome of the happy ancestry on earth is a pit
where one denied a lucky star also comes to dwell.
In which the deprived of good fortune settles

Even if you, O house of Suwal, lived on,
And if you, O people of Sowal, lived
bereaved and grieving, you could not turn it back.
Like the length of this sorrow, you would not be able

So bear patiently what God has ordained, for acceptance
So, patience over what God has ordained, for contentment
of destiny's decree is a duty for free man and slave.
With the judgment of fate is a duty upon the free and the slave

And at Nakhl you are like the stars: should there fall
And you are date palms like stars, so if
a star of yours, another star appears to guide you.
A star of yours is eclipsed, a star appears to guide you

If Samh lives on, generosity is his emblem;
If the kind Samh lives, kindness is his banner
and from Muqbil comes good fortune; Rashid has sound judgment.
And of the coming future, Rashid guides with guidance

You have a successor to Nasir, the glory of Ya'rub,
For you is a successor to Nasser of glory that impresses
Sultan's scion, the peerless young lord to whom people turn.
A lineage of the sultan, the unique, matchless young man

So may he ever remain a bulwark shielding you from calamities,
So he remains a barrier protecting you from tribulations
and may you ever remain his storehouse of protection.
While you remain his mighty towering barrier
