وَياand O طالباًseeker of شرحan explanation of السؤالquestioning فآنهfor it
وَيا طالباً شرح السؤال فآنه
علىinto خَمسةfive قرَّبتهI made it accessible لكfor you مطلباas an object of study
على خَمسة قرَّبته لك مطلبا
And O seeker of an explanation of questioning—for it
O seeker asking for explanation of the question,
falls into five kinds; I have made it accessible for you to study.
I have summarized it for you in five requisites
سؤالan inquiry علىaccording to الاجماعconsensus فيat كلevery ساعةhour
سؤال على الاجماع في كل ساعة
عَلىupon البالغone who has reached الحلمpuberty المهذبwell-mannered أَوجباwas made obligatory
عَلى البالغ الحلم المهذب أَوجبا
One inquiry, by consensus, at every hour,
A question about consensus at all times
is obligatory for the well-mannered person who has reached puberty.
Is incumbent upon the forbearing, wise, well-mannered one
وذلكand that فيماconcerning what لاnot يوسّعis permitted جهلهignorance of it
وذلك فيما لا يوسّع جهله
فكنso be فيهin it بالاخلاصwith sincerity والبرand righteousness مذرباadept
فكن فيه بالاخلاص والبر مذربا
That concerns what one may not remain ignorant of.
And that is regarding what his ignorance does not excuse
So be adept in it, with sincerity and righteousness.
In it be sincere and righteous in your path
وغيرand without اختلافdisagreement فيregarding سؤالan inquiry محرّمforbidden
وغير اختلاف في سؤال محرّم
سؤالكyour asking عنabout عوراتprivate faults منsomeone who قدalready تغيباbecame absent
سؤالك عن عورات من قد تغيبا
And without disagreement, a forbidden inquiry is
And no difference of opinion in forbidden question
your asking about the private faults of someone who is absent.
Your asking about the nakedness of one who is absent
ومهماand whatever اعتراهbefell it الاختلافdisagreement وواجباًand obligatory
ومهما اعتراه الاختلاف وواجباً
سؤالكyour asking عنabout أحداثacts منsomeone who لكfor you مجتباis chosen
سؤالك عن أحداث من لك مجتبا
And an inquiry whose obligation is disputed is
And whatever disagreement and obligation it contains
your asking about the acts of someone you have chosen
Your asking about news of one who is virtuous to you
ولياًas a friend أَتىdid فعلاًan act بهthrough it كانwas حادثاًan offense
ولياً أَتى فعلاً به كان حادثاً
عليهagainst him ولكُand for you القلبthe heart منهabout him تورباgrew uneasy
عليه ولكُ القلب منه توربا
as a friend, who has done a deed that counts
A loyal one who has done a deed that is new
against him, and your heart has grown uneasy about him.
To him and your heart is inclined towards him
وأَيضاًand also سؤالan inquiry كرهوهthey disliked it وانهand it is
وأَيضاً سؤال كرهوه وانه
سؤالكyour asking عماabout what ليسdoes not يعنيconcern you ويجتبىand is sought out
سؤالك عما ليس يعني ويجتبى
There is also an inquiry they disliked, namely
Also, a question they disliked as it is
your asking about what does not concern you, yet is sought out.
Your asking about what is not pertinent and sought after
وأَماand as for سؤالan inquiry فهوthen it فيهin it فضيلةmerit
وأَما سؤال فهو فيه فضيلة
سؤالكyour asking عنabout علمknowledge لهtoward it صرتyou have become مندباencouraged
سؤالك عن علم له صرت مندبا
And as for another inquiry, there is merit in it:
As for a question in which there is virtue
your asking about knowledge you have been encouraged to pursue.
Your asking about knowledge which you have been enjoined to
