وهل تعلموا دون المنية واقيا
Ask: do you see any creature, however mighty, enduring?
Ask if they have seen a creature remain alive forever,
And do you know a protector against death?
Or if they know of anyone immune from death.

من الموت لو أمسى على النجم راقيا
Neither Salim nor Salim's son among us is safe
Far from us, O Salim and son of Salim,
from death, even if at evening he ascended to a star.
To escape death even if we climbed to the highest star.

يلاقي المنايا القاطعات الأمانيا
The young man lives as long as he lives; inevitably, an hour comes
The young man lives only as long as he is destined,
when he meets the deaths that cut hopes short.
For he will inevitably meet his death which severs all hopes.
فياso O عجباًwonder فإنfor if يعزيهhe consoles him مثلهhis like
فيا عجباً فإن يعزيه مثله
علىover مثلهhis like فانٍa mortal ويجمعand joins فانياa mortal
على مثله فانٍ ويجمع فانيا
How strange, then, if his like consoles him
How strange that one like him consoles another,
over his like—a mortal joining another mortal.
When both are doomed to fade and perish.

Behold, we are dead men, and children of the same,
Behold, we are already dead, children of death itself,
and fathers of the dead, middle-aged and young.
With deceased fathers, elders and youth alike.

The lowly man's share among his people in death's allotment
The lot of the wretched among people in the distribution of ruin
is like that of the man who has become tyrannical among them.
Is like one who turned a rebel among his people.

And the cup from which every guide is made to drink,
The cup given to every misguided one to drink
death gives to everyone who has gone astray.
Has been served by death to all who went astray.

And the hump-backed bier that bears a most devout man
The lame she-camel carries the most pious,
bears one laden with corruption and misdeeds.
Bearing the loads of good and evil alike.

How many a man of wealth has come to lie in the lifeless earth,
How many men of wealth now lie in barren soil,
and departs from it with a diminished hand, naked.
Leaving it naked, without even a palmful.

Behold, this world is but lush meadows,
Know that the world is but fragrant meadows,
and we are grazing herds, while hope has become our shepherd.
While we are cattle and hope has become our herder.

With hopes we pluck the buds of its flowers,
We pluck the sleeves of its flowers with our hopes,
and lead ourselves to pools overflowing with treachery.
And water it with our treachery, endlessly roaming.

تمزق منا النائحات الأماقيا
And we take fright only at funerals, when they come,
We are startled only by dirges, when they turn
as the wailing women rend the inner corners of our eyes.
Our keen mourners to tear us apart.

And when the dead man who once was upon it is buried,
Though the deceased who walked upon it is buried,
we all resume grazing, forgetful of death.
Tomorrow we will all forget, grazing obliviously to our death.

Far be it from me to forget Gharib and his daughter,
Far from me to forget a stranger and his daughter,
for both have made their home in my heart and the pupils of my eyes.
Who made me love them and treat them as family.

They are the two masters of the Abdal; you never found either
They were leaders of the righteous, from whom
heedless of remembrance, even if he loosened both tethers.
Even when my mind wandered, remembrance did not.

They slew the heat of day and brought to life
They were killed in the heat of the day, and revived
the dark nights, through fasting and sincere vigils of prayer.
Through devout vigil and prayers before dawn.

Gharib is a stranger, and she is the like of a stranger,
A stranger, a stranger - and she was strangely beautiful,
in a dwelling where piety and favors suffice me.
In a land where I found my people and helping hands.

For no creature is made immortal by noble deeds;
By their virtuous deeds, not favors, were they immortalized -
otherwise, these two would have endured as long as Thahlan endures.
As long as two mourners remain, they shall endure.

But what an example we have in the Chosen One!
But for me the Prophet is the perfect example,
He passed away, yet you see this world unchanged.
However the world appears, this I see clear.

If weeping could help us bring back what has passed,
If weeping could return the departed, we would live
we would live, each of us weeping as long as he lived.
And none would die, remaining tearful forever.

But some of us advance, and some follow behind,
and some come last, following along the trail.
Each destined to meet the fate written for him.

Inevitably we shall find ourselves tomorrow
may God, the Generous, make the reunion good.
In a place of meeting, may God make it pleasant.

The new moon of Cancer watered their twin graves,
by the streaming spouts of a cloud with both belts loosened.
While I lamented, my companionship severed.

To the highest places in eternity they ascended.

And grant them the finest companionship in the hereafter.
