الرزق ما بين خلق اللَه مقسومٌ

الرزق ما بين خلق اللَه مقسومٌ

والخلق صنفان مرزوقٌ ومحروم

والخلق صنفان مرزوقٌ ومحروم

Provision is apportioned among God's creatures.

And creatures are of two kinds: provided for and deprived.

لا تجهد النفس للأرزاق في طلب

لا تجهد النفس للأرزاق في طلب

شتان خالٍ من الدنيا ومهموم

شتان خالٍ من الدنيا ومهموم

Do not exhaust yourself in seeking sustenance.

How far apart are one free of the world and one burdened with worry.

وربما رزق العصفور جائزةً

وربما رزق العصفور جائزةً

بها يعيش وأحرمن القشاعيم

بها يعيش وأحرمن القشاعيم

And sometimes a sparrow is granted a gift

on which it lives, while the aged vultures are deprived.

والمرء في حالة الدارين محتكم

والمرء في حالة الدارين محتكم

وكل ما قدر الرحمن محتوم

وكل ما قدر الرحمن محتوم

And man, in the circumstances of both abodes, is subject to judgment.

And all the Most Merciful decrees is inevitable.

وإنما نحن في الدنيا أولو سفرٍ

وإنما نحن في الدنيا أولو سفرٍ

وإنها منهج للحشد ديموم

وإنها منهج للحشد ديموم

And we are but travelers in this world,

and it is a desert path to the gathering.

عشنا نجمع ما عقباه مفترقٌ

عشنا نجمع ما عقباه مفترقٌ

فيها ونعمر ما عقباه مهدوم

فيها ونعمر ما عقباه مهدوم

We have lived gathering what will finally be scattered,

within it, and building what will finally be demolished.

وكلنا بهوى دنياه مشتغلٌ

وكلنا بهوى دنياه مشتغلٌ

بها له ثم تأخيرٌ وتقديم

بها له ثم تأخيرٌ وتقديم

And each of us is absorbed in desire for his worldly life;

in it, there are setbacks and advances for him.

وليس نعلم بالموت الزؤام وذو ال

وليس نعلم بالموت الزؤام وذو ال

جد الوضيع على الأغفال موزوم

جد الوضيع على الأغفال موزوم

And we are unaware of swift, dreadful death, and the man of

lowly fortune is constrained among the heedless.

آمالنا في صبىً والشيب ينحلنا

آمالنا في صبىً والشيب ينحلنا

وهن مردٌ ومنا الجسم مهروم

وهن مردٌ ومنا الجسم مهروم

Our hopes are youthful, while gray hair wastes us away.

They are beardless youths, while our bodies are decrepit.

نرجو البقاء وموجود البقاء لنا

نرجو البقاء وموجود البقاء لنا

فيما نفكر بالتحقيق معدوم

فيما نفكر بالتحقيق معدوم

We hope for lasting life, yet the lasting life available to us,

when we reflect, is truly nonexistent.

آمالنا بالألى الماضين موعظةٌ

آمالنا بالألى الماضين موعظةٌ

ذلت لحكمهم السبع الأقاليم

ذلت لحكمهم السبع الأقاليم

In those who went before lies a warning for our hopes:

the seven regions bowed to their rule.

ما كان حظهم منها سوى حفر

ما كان حظهم منها سوى حفر

وكلهم لمجال الدور مسلوم

وكلهم لمجال الدور مسلوم

Their share of it was nothing but grave-pits,

and all were surrendered to time's revolving course.

تبّاً لدار فلا تبقى على جدة

تبّاً لدار فلا تبقى على جدة

ولا بها ظالمٌ يبقى ومظلوم

ولا بها ظالمٌ يبقى ومظلوم

Ruin upon an abode that does not retain its prosperity,

where neither oppressor nor oppressed remains.

غنيها ما بقي فيها فمهموم

غنيها ما بقي فيها فمهموم

فقيرها بنغيص العيش مغموم

فقيرها بنغيص العيش مغموم

Its rich man is troubled as long as he stays in it;

its poor man is grief-stricken by the bitterness of living.

دعاها فما ضحكت إلا بكت ومتى

دعاها فما ضحكت إلا بكت ومتى

تصل جفت وسخاها عنده لوم

تصل جفت وسخاها عنده لوم

Leave it: it never laughs without weeping; and whenever

it draws close, it turns cold, and its bounty is blameworthy in his eyes.
