وازمع عمن لا أود زماعه
I bid farewell to one whose farewell I cannot bear.
I bid farewell to those I cannot bid farewell to,
And resolve to leave one whose departure I do not desire.
And I gather from those I do not want to gather from.

And how many a lover, tender toward his beloved,
How many a loving friend worried for his friend,
Has been frightened by the cawing of separation's crow.
Whom the crow of separation cawed for.

And how often a lover's ears were made to hear of parting;
And how many ears of a lover have I heard,
He was urged on with what he found no pleasure in hearing.
What he heard does not please him.

As though my heart had been frozen by what it heard,
It is as if my heart was numb to hearing,
And bidding Layla farewell were embers that melted it.
And bidding farewell to Layla was like embers stoking it.

I had known my heart not to [ache] from separation,
I entrusted my heart not to show tenderness from yearning,
For love; yet behold, bidding Layla farewell has made it ache.
For love, yet bidding farewell to Layla stirred it.

وكان كتوم السر قبل وداعهغا

فذاع مع التوديع مع من أذاعه
It had kept its secret before bidding her farewell,
And keeping the secret was better before the farewell,
Then at farewell the secret spread with those who disclosed it.
So it spread with the farewell, with the one who spread it.

As I bid my Layla farewell, I am like a merchant,
It is as if I were a merchant bidding Layla farewell,
Who had precious wealth and lost it.
And he had precious wealth he lost.

ثوباً ورجاه لليلى ارتجاعه
May God, through parting, have provided His servant
May Allah reward His servant with the farewell,
With a garment, and given him hope of returning to Layla.
A garment and hope to regain it from Layla.
إذاif ضاقbecame constricted أمرan affair فارجthen hope بعدafter مضيقهits straits

If an affair grows straitened, hope, after its straits,
When matters narrow, so expand after the strait,
For relief to come to you from God, the Generous.
For you from the Generous God is its expansion.

فأول شيء فاقد لرضاعه

فأعطاه ما ينسى الإله رضاعه
For the first thing is being deprived of suckling,
So the first thing lost for his approval,
Then God gave him what made him forget his suckling.
Then He gave him what makes him forget the Nurturer's approval.

If you gain forgiveness on the day you bid her farewell,
When you win forgiveness the day of her farewell,
Then the finest thing is the favor you hoped to receive.
Then the best thing is what you hope to do.

And I know the servant is saved when he disobeys
And teach me that the servant confiding when he disobeyed,
Abu Murra in his love, and disregards him.
A loving Master once and lost Him.

على العبد فيما لا يطيق رفاعه
And that is through divine aid; knowledge precedes
And that is with success and knowledge preceding,
The servant in what he has no power to avert.
The servant in what he cannot lift off.

For many a learned man's sandal has slipped, bringing him to misery,
How many scholars slip for them the slipper of misery,
And many an ignorant man has God granted an unfettered reach.
And how many ignorant were freed by God their bond.

Nothing can prevent what God has decreed for a person;
So no preventing what Allah decreed for a person,
For the decrees of fate may tear down his defenses.
For the decrees have crumbled before him refusing them.

In You, O God, I seek refuge and place my trust;
In You I take refuge and trust,
And whoever takes refuge in You does not fear alarm.
And whoever takes refuge in You will not fear terror.

So be gentle with a servant who has committed against You what he has committed,
So kindness to a servant who gathered in You what gathered,
And sought refuge at the gate of pardon, hoping for its breadth.
And took refuge in the door of pardon hoping and timing it.

When a wrongdoer takes refuge beside a benefactor,
When a wrongdoer sought refuge in the side of a benefactor,
And returns repentant, his disposition is not disowned for the past [wording unclear].
And came yet was not rebuked for his past nature.

If You do not join the cord of hope from You with favor
If you do not tie the rope of hope from You with approval,
Toward me, I am justified in judging it severed.
I deserve you counted its severance from me.

So grant Your servant, overwhelmed by sin, a mercy
So grant Your servant condemned with sin mercy,
That veils, in both abodes, what he has neglected.
That veils in the two abodes what he lost.
