    I am the stranger, but for glory and noble standing,

    And the two rescuers—by my life—learning and refinement.

    Nor can anyone be a stranger who has

    The mother of eminence for a mother, and glory for a father.

    فقلت كل غريب فهو مغترب

    So I have not gone into exile away from family or homeland;

    And I said: every stranger is an exile.

    ولست أَرضى بدوني حيث أَصطحب

    I choose from the sons of the days only a true friend;

    I accept no one beneath me when choosing a companion.

    أَنا الصحيح ومن فيه بهم جرب

    Radiant virtues have driven me away from my age;

    I am the healthy one, while those within it have mange.

    And though I was one of them and lived in their age,

    Indeed, gold has grown from the very substance of earth.

    كانوا على مذهبي لو وقفوا ذهبوا

    And this age and those within it are upon a path;

    Had they stood upon my way, they would have departed.

    People are kinds, classes sorted into classes,

    Like birds: a hawk, and among them ringdoves and the male bustard.

    Would that I knew about my offspring, should I leave them

    As heirs, without wearying the offspring left to succeed me.

    O delight of the eye, O coolness of the heart, does not

    My scar draw you toward me, from where I answer the call?

    And in you a true expectation of nobility is fulfilled:

    That you are the cub, tracing your descent to the lion.

    فغابة الأسد الحامي الحمى ثقب

    And that your thicket is Thaqb—may you not fret over it;

    For Thaqb is the thicket of the lion who guards his domain.

    O Hamza, O father of cubs as your byname,

    Noble deeds are your title among humankind.

    فما يزيدك رزقاً ذلك الطلب

    Do not exhaust yourself in seeking sustenance;

    Such seeking does not increase your provision.

    And seek provision from God through clear knowledge, for

    It is said: through knowledge you acquire abundant wealth.

    For a dog is better than one who has no refinement,

    No chastity, no knowledge, and no possessions.

    There is no pride except in obedience to God and in

    Noble knowledge; lineage is a wretched source of pride.

    The least of worldly things suffices you; how often

    A single date has relieved a hungry person's hunger.

    It is my duty to counsel you, O coolness of the heart, and O

    Light of my eye; I am departing, sorrow-stricken.

    Do not sever the flowing bounty extended from you to

    Your Creator through knowledge and piety: these are the bond.

    And a thousand thousand greetings have visited your presence,

    As clouds visit the meadow's daughters.

    They encompass your family and all your paternal uncles,

    And your kin, or whoever draws nearer to God through you.
