علىfor العرضhonor منيmy own أنlest أكونI become سفيهاa fool
I feigned deafness to the fool's vile abuse, out of concern
I refrained from berating the foolish detractor,
for my honor, lest I become a fool myself.
Guarding my honour lest I become foolish myself.

علىto قذعةٍan insult منfrom مبتليهhis tormentor كفيهاis spared it
And I know that a noble man like me, when he overlooks
And I know that when a free man like me is angered
an insult from his tormentor, is spared it.
And berates a wretched one among the afflicted, he restrains it.

When a vile utterance comes from a foul-mouthed man,
When an ugly slanderer of corrupt character appears,
if you do not answer him, it returns to the mouth it came from.
Her refuge, if you do not rebuke her, is her own mouth.

Do not be among those who say, 'Whoever sells goods
And be not like one who said, in selling his wares,
to me, I find the asking price; he is paid it in full.' [Reading uncertain]
"For me I find the price of goods and sell them as they are."
إذاif نسبتyou ascribe عوراًflaws إلىto ذاتthe self of خائفٍone who fears

If you ascribe flaws to someone who fears
If you ascribe disgrace to one fearful for his honour
for his honor, he denies what is said.
From what is said to deny it, then raise it from him through discreet absence,
وإنand if رفعتis reported عنهabout him بغيبin his absence ذميمةٍa reproach

And if a reproach is reported about him in his absence,
And seek from his faithful one concealment of that blame,
he questions the one who conveyed its hidden details to him.
For one whose honour is disgraced has something within himself concealed.

And whoever has debased honor brings forth
So oh my loneliness among people, my chosen one,
against himself, from within himself, what lies hidden there.
For a group you have chosen has made me feel loneliness.

فقدfor indeed أوحضتنيhas left me desolate (uncertain reading) عصبةa band اصطفيهاI choose it
Oh, my desolation! Who among people can be my chosen companion?
I see people, products of the earth, sweet and sour,
For a band I choose has left me desolate. [Reading uncertain]
Bitter and mellow - of them that plant bears fruit.

I see humankind as the earth's daughter—sweet and sour,
This is my Layla, if with her you seek exaltation,
and bitter; that planting is from her and in her.
Then be lowly with her and you will be exalted through her.

And this is my night: if you seek high rank in it,
Oh, would that I had seized in life a chance,
be base within it, and you will be among its pampered ones.
That I might be healed among the folk of passion through it.

Oh, if only I could seize an opportunity in time,
so that through it I might sate my anger against the foul-mouthed.
