My hearing has betrayed me; my sight has betrayed my eye.

And my heart has grown gray, so my hair is not to blame.

    فصرت منها إلى الريعان والصغر

    I moistened my gray hair and my hopes with a budding maiden;

so through her I returned to youth's bloom and childhood.

    جهلي وذنبي عظيم كامل الكبر

    My forbearance is foolish, young in years, and despised;

my folly and my sin are great and fully grown.

I postponed my repentance in the days of youth; what, then,

after going gray, is my excuse if I postpone it?

A wound we fend off cuts life short at once.

Yet I have neither desisted nor grown wary at the warnings.

I obey my soul and disobey those who rebuke me for it.

It seeks its own guidance, yet leads me into treachery.

The soul tells me, 'Seize a pleasure that has come,

and follow my desire through what remains of life.'

Yet it did not know that, in the aftermath of its pleasures,

lie vexations whose draught drives one away from returning.

May God protect me from a cunning, ruthless soul,

blind, aware only when already in Saqar.

Its favors belong to God; of Iblis, its leader,

and of its desire, I am fearful and wary.

And all the Creator decreed for me has come to pass,

inevitably; what is decreed has no sway over destiny.

Yet a hope I hold in God has lifted me

from the abyss of despair branded with arrogance.

My sin is great, and God's pardon is greater than

my sin; the abundant cannot be equated with the scant.

I love the deeds of the righteous for God's sake, and have not

ceased in this, though my standing has fallen short of theirs.

May the All-Merciful gather me with their community,

in a company with them, among the best companies.

It has been said: if one loves in this world, even a stone,

what was loved—even of stone—will surely be resurrected.

Pardon, clemency, forgiveness, and fulfillment of wishes—

O mender of the broken, mend my brokenness with Your favor.
