At Muscat's abode, the stay has grown long,

and my companions there have wearied of hostility.

I am confined, as though a captive there,

with neither a ransomer at hand nor ransom.

And my eyelids have feared sleep there,

so there is no slumber, nor fare to leave it.

I seek to conceal my secret there, but

because of what I have endured, concealment is gone.

I lodged there in winter, and we did not leave

    until winter was nearly over.

And wretched is a dwelling where there is no

refuge or friends for its lodger.

My heart yearned for noble Layla,

but how can I meet her from so far away?

And if God decrees continued life for us,

we shall reach her, if continued life is decreed.

We asked God for success in reaching her,

for there is no protection beyond His power.

And if misery is warded off, then, if we arrive

by God's leave, misery will vanish with her.

O my Lord, indeed, the aching longing for Layla,

like love for You, is to us a welcome longing.

And the sickness of yearning for her has grown within us,

and the sight of her is our cure.

Our love spends the night journeying toward her,

as the wailing millstone moves through the night.

O my Lord—a plea from one crying for help:

the greatest resource for aiding him is prayer.

O You who never disappoint a hopeful soul's trust,

to You, to You, hope has led me.

So grant me what I desire for union with Layla,

for You can do whatever You will.
