للدهرagainst time منfrom كلall ماthat which يحاذرُهُhe dreads it
Our master, in whom we place our hopes,
Our revered teacher, from whom we hope
against time and all that one dreads:
Protection from all that time may bring,
هذاthis نبيذwine رايتهI found it حسناًfine
مستعذباًpleasant to drink يرتضيهhe approves of it خابرُهُone familiar with it
This is wine I found fine,
This is a wine whose beauty I saw,
pleasant to drink, pleasing to one who knows it.
Sweetly palatable to its drinker.
وإنand indeed عذريmy excuse فيfor فرطthe extremity قلتهits scantiness
باطنهits inward aspect واضحclear وظاهرُهُand its outward aspect
And indeed, my excuse for its very small quantity
My excuse for praising it excessively
is clear, both inwardly and outwardly:
Is that its inner nature matches its outside.
إذfor كانwas هذاthis الذيwhich بعثتI sent بهit (as the object of sending)
أولthe first ماwhat عندناwe have وآخرُهُand its last
for this, which I sent,
Since this which I have sent you
was the first and last of what we had.
Is the first and last of our stock.
