جحدت ولاء مولانا علي
وقدمتand I preferred الدعيthe pretender علىover الوصِّيthe appointed successor
وقدمت الدعي على الوصِّي
I would have denied allegiance to our master Ali
I denied the loyalty to our master Ali
and preferred the pretender over the appointed successor,
And I preferred the claimant over the appointed successor
متىwhenever ماemphatic particle قلتI said إنthat السيفthe sword أمضىmore piercing
متى ما قلت إن السيف أمضى
منthan اللحظاتglances فيin قلبthe heart of الشجيthe lovelorn one
من اللحظات في قلب الشجي
if ever I said that the sword cuts deeper
Whenever I said the sword was sharper
than glances in the heart of the lovelorn.
Than glances in the heart of the brave
لقدindeed فعلتhave done جفونكyour eyelids فيin فؤاديmy heart
لقد فعلت جفونك في فؤادي
كفعلlike the deed of يزيدYazid فيto آلthe family of النبيthe Prophet
كفعل يزيد في آل النبي
Your eyelids have indeed done to my heart
Your eyelids have done to my heart
what Yazid did to the Prophet’s family.
