لَكَyours المَثَلُthe ideal الأَعلىhighest وَمالَكَand you have no مِنany مِثلِequal
وَمَدحُand praise العِدىthe foes قَولاًin words وَمَدحُكَand praise of you بِالفِعلِin deeds
Yours is the highest ideal, and you have no equal.
You are the highest ideal, none can compare,
Praise of foes is in words, but praise of you is in deeds.
Praising enemies is mere words, but yours is deed,
وَفيand in كَفِّكَyour palm السَيلُthe torrent الَّذيwhich هُوَit مُسجِلٌattesting
بِأَنَّكَto the fact that you تُنمَىare traced by descent فيamong الغَمامِthe clouds إِلىto أَصلِa root
And in your palm is the torrent that bears witness
In your hands flows the flood dutifully registered,
That your lineage has its root among the clouds.
To grow, through clouds, back to its root,
لَئِنif indeed ذَكَرواthey mentioned الفَضلَal-Fadl بنَson of يَحيىYahya بنَson of خالِدٍKhalid
فَإِنَّكَthen indeed you قَدhave already أَنسَيتَناmade us forget الفَضلَal-Fadl بِالفَضلِthrough bounty
If they mention al-Fadl ibn Yahya ibn Khalid,
If they mention Al-Fadl son of Yahya son of Khalid,
Then you have made us forget al-Fadl through your bounty.
You made us forget Al-Fadl with your overflowing grace,
فَكَمso how often لَكَfor you مِنof تَنزيلِbringing down نَصرٍvictory بِلاwithout نَصلِa blade
وَكَمand how often لَكَfor you مِنof تَرحيلٍbanishing مَحلِdrought بِلاwithout مَهلِdelay
So often have you brought down victory without a blade!
Many are your victorious descents without sheaths,
And so often have you banished drought without delay!
Many are your sublime departures without farewells,
وَلِلَهِand to God belongs سَيفٌa sword مِنكَfrom you يَجلوscours away صَداrust الهُدىguidance
إِذاwhen كانَis سَيفُthe sword الهِندِof India يُجلىis polished وَلاand does not يُجليpolish
And God has a sword from you that scours the rust from guidance,
God has a sword in you that polishes the echo of guidance,
When the sword of India is polished, yet does not polish.
When the Indian sword brightens but does not enlighten.
