مَنwho ليfor me بِوَجهِكَwith your face وَالشَبابِand youth وَثَروَةٍand wealth
وَالأَمنِand safety مِنfrom دَهريmy time وَمِنand from أَبنائِهِits sons
Who will grant me your face, youth, and wealth,
Who will give me your face and youth and wealth
and safety from my time and its sons?
And safety from my fate and from its sons
وَيحَalas for المُحِبِّthe lover وَقلبُهُand his heart وَحَبيبُهُand his beloved
وَرَقيبُهُand his watcher وَالدَهرُand time مِنamong أَعدائِهِhis enemies
Alas for the lover: his heart and his beloved,
Alas for the lover and his heart and his beloved
his watcher and time are among his enemies.
And his watcher and time against his enemies
وَيَموتُand he dies بِالداءِof the illness الَّذيwhich فيin قَلبِهِhis heart
وَيَخافُand he fears مِنof عِلمِknowledge الطَبيبِthe physician بَدائِهِof his illness
And he dies of the illness within his heart,
And he dies of the sickness that is in his heart
and fears his illness becoming known to the physician
And fears the physician's knowledge of his illness
وَعَذولِهِand his reproacher وَكَفاهُand has sufficed him هَمُّthe trouble عَذولِهِhis reproacher
وَالمَوتُand death مِنهُfrom him وَمِنand from تَفَلسُفِthe philosophizing رائِهِhis observer
and his reproacher—the trouble his reproacher brings is enough for him,
And his disdain, and his disdain's grief suffices him
and death from him and from his observer's philosophizing.
And death from it and from the sophistry of his opinions
وَتَكَلُّمٍand speech مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath نَثرِthe scattering دُموعِهِhis tears
لِمُكَلَّمٍof a wounded one مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath نارِthe fire بَلائِهِhis affliction
And speech from beneath the scattering of his tears,
And talking from beneath the prose of his tears
from one wounded beneath the fire of his affliction.
To one who talks from beneath the fire of his tribulation
تَبدوappear نُجومُthe stars الشَيبِof gray hair فَوقَabove صَباحِهاits dawn
وَالنَجمُand the star لاnot يَبدوappears بِلاwithout ظَلمائِهِits darkness
The stars of gray hair appear above its dawn,
The stars of grey hair appear over its morning
and a star does not appear without its darkness.
And a star does not appear without its darkness
وَمُضيءِand a radiant one شَمسِthe sun الوَجهِof the face لمdid not يَهدِguide الهَوىlove
فيin خاطِريmy mind إِلّاexcept سِراجُthe lamp ضِيائِهِhis radiance
And a radiant, sun-faced one—nothing guided love
The shining sun of the face did not guide love
within my mind except the lamp of his radiance.
In my thoughts but by the lantern of its light
Sol 6.1
