مَنwho ليfor me بِهِwith him بَدرَa full moon كِلَّهْall of him
قَدindeed حازَhe captured قَلبِيَmy heart كُلَّهْall of it
Who will bring him to me, a full moon through and through?
Who is he who has my heart entirely?
He has captured my whole heart.
My heart he has come to possess wholly.
فَهَلso, will ...? تُرىI wonder يَتَعَزَّزْhe acts proud
وَالعِزُّand honor فيin الحُبِّlove ذِلَّهْabasement
So will he, I wonder, act proud,
Will he then strengthen and gain might?
when honor in love is abasement?
But might in love is frailty!
رَضيتُI accepted فيهِfor his sake مُصابيmy affliction
فَماso what عَلىupon الناسِpeople مِنّيfrom me
I have accepted my affliction for his sake;
I am content with what befalls me,
so what trouble am I to others?
So no more complaints come from me.
وَراحَتيand my comfort فيin عَذابيmy torment
فَلَوso if مَضىwent away ذاكَthat عَنّيfrom me
And my comfort lies in my torment;
My peace lies in my torment,
so if that were to leave me,
Were he to leave, my heart would yearn for what has passed.
لَاِشتاقَwould yearn قَلبيmy heart لِماfor what بيwithin me
فَهَلso, do ...? عَلِمتُمyou all knew بِأَنّيof the fact that I
my heart would yearn for what afflicts me.
Do you not know that I have come
So do you know that I
To bear an affliction of dreams perturbing?
أَمسَيتُI reached evening أَحمِلُI bear مُقلَهْan eye
مِنَof المَنامِsleep مُقِلَّهْhaving little
have reached evening bearing an eye
If only a phantom would visit while I slept,
with little share of sleep?
My sleep would find comfort in that dream!
لَوif زارَهاvisited it الطَيفُthe dream-phantom أَعوَزْwould be lacking
نَومٌsleep يَكونُwould be مَحَلَّهْits abode
If the dream-phantom visited it, there would be no
I have mingled from her cups
sleep to serve as its abode.
That illuminate gloom with rays
مَزَجتُI mixed مِنهاfrom it كُئوساcups
تَجلوdispel الدُجىthe darkness بِشُعاعِwith radiance
I mixed cups of it
When she appears as brilliant suns
that dispel the darkness with radiance,
And the meadow rises for play,
إِذاwhen تَجَلَّتthey shine forth شُموساas suns
وَقامَand arose لِلَهوِfor revelry داعِa herald
when they shine forth as suns
The garden appears a bride
and a herald of revelry rises.
Encircled by valiant trees,
فَالرَوضُso the garden يُجلىis unveiled عَروساas a bride
قَدalready سُوِّرَتhas been braceleted بِشُجاعِwith a serpent
Then the garden is unveiled as a bride,
Its trees are like the crescent moon,
already braceleted with a serpent.
The garden scattered with its new blossoms.
أَشجارُهاher trees مِثلُlike كِلَّهْa gauze canopy
فَالرَوضُso the garden مَطرحُa mat بِذلَهْeveryday use
Her trees are like a gauze canopy;
It has a stream like necklaces
so the garden is a mat for everyday use,
So look upon the work of God
لَهُit has مِنَfrom النَهرِthe river فَروَزْan edging
فَاِنظُرso look إِلىat صَنعَةِthe handiwork of اللَهْGod
with the river as its edging.
Who has renewed Saad's good fortune
So look upon God's handiwork.
For the king from Saad's family
قَدindeed جَدَّدَrenewed اللَهُGod سَعداgood fortune
لِلمُلكِfor the realm مِنfrom آلِthe house of سَعدِSa'd
God has renewed good fortune
With the souls of people ransomed
for the realm, from the house of Sa'd.
And if they refuse, I alone stand
بِأَنفُسِwith the lives الخَلقِof humankind يُفدىhe is ransomed
وَإِنand if أَبَواthey refuse كُنتُI would be وَحديalone
He is ransomed with the lives of humankind,
His swords do not falter to strike
and if they refuse, I alone would do so.
Nor rest in their sheaths
سُيوفُهُhis swords لَيسَdo not تَصداrust
وَلاnor تَقَرُّrest بِغِمدِin a sheath
His swords do not rust,
Still under the royal shade
nor do they rest in a sheath.
Dispelling the shadowed misfortunes
ماnot زالَceased دونَbefore المَظَلَّهْthe parasol
يَجلوhe dispels الخُطوبَthe calamities المُظِلَّهْshadow-casting
He has never ceased, before the parasol,
Whose spears now sparkle
to dispel the shadow-casting calamities.
With triumph since he brandished blades
فَنُونُهاso its letter nūn قَدalready تَطَرَّزْbecame embroidered
بِالنَصرِwith victory مُذsince سَلَّhe drew نَصلَهْhis blade
So its nūn has been embroidered
Tongues praise him for what he says and does
with victory since he drew his blade.
A face dispelling gloom, in his grip fire flames
تُثنيpraise عَلَيهِupon him الأَسِنَّهْthe spearheads
بِماfor what يَقولُhe says وَيَفعَلْand he does
The spearheads praise him
In but a glance of his an army bears
for what he says and does.
Against the prolonged troops
وَجهٌa face مُجَلّيdispelling الدُجُنَّهْthe gloom
فيin كَفِّهِhis palm النارُthe fire تُشعَلْis kindled
A face that dispels the gloom;
With an army of sound opinion fully equipped
in his palm, fire is kindled.
He is seen capable of a thousand deeds
فيin نَظرَةٍa glance مِنهُfrom him حَملَهْa charge
عَلىagainst الجُيوشِthe armies المُطِلَّهْlooming
In a glance from him is a charge
While Gadah the daughter of Anah
against the looming armies,
Departed and tears flowed
بِجَيشِwith an army رَأيٍof thought مُجَهَّزْequipped
يُرىis deemed عَلىabove أَلفِa thousand فِعلَهْa deed
with a well-equipped army of thought,
In an agony she could not reveal
deemed superior to a thousand deeds.
Had it not been for overwhelmed shock
وَغادَةٍand a graceful maiden بِنتُI parted عَنهاfrom her
سَرَتshe journeyed by night وَلِلدَمعِand the tears had رَشَّهْa spray
And a graceful maiden, from whom I parted,
How many nights did the palm tree's sparrow
journeyed by night, with tears falling in a spray,
Sleep with the other sparrows all together
بِلَوعَةٍwith anguish لَمdid not تُبِنهاshe disclosed it
لَولاbut for تَعَرُّضُthe onset of دَهشَهْbewilderment
with anguish she would not have disclosed
While my heart lay broken in pieces
but for the onset of bewilderment.
Alone, none like it
كَمhow often باتَspent the night عُصفورُa sparrow نَخلَهْa palm tree
مَعَwith العَصافيرِthe sparrows جُملَهْall together
How often a palm-tree sparrow has spent the night
with the sparrows all together,
وَباتَand spent the night قَلبيmy heart مُفَرَّزْset apart
وَحديalone وَماand not بِتُّI spent the night مِثلَهْlike it
while my heart spent the night set apart,
alone; I did not pass the night as it did.
