حَيثُwhere ماءُwater الشَبابِof youth فيin وَجنَتَيهاher two cheeks
لَيسَdoes not يَجريflow وَنارُهُand its fire لاnot تُشَبُّis kindled
Where the water of youth in her cheeks
Where the water of youth flows in its valleys
does not flow, and its fire is not kindled,
It does not flow and its fire is not kindled
لَمdid not أَخَفI fear حَيَّةًa serpent عَلىon الخَدِّthe cheek تَسعىcreeping
لاno وَلاnor عَقرَباًa scorpion عَلَيهِupon it يَدِبُّcrawls
I feared no serpent creeping over the cheek,
I did not fear a snake crawling on my cheek
No, nor a scorpion crawling upon it.
Nor a scorpion creeping on it
مِتُّI died ضيقاًof anguish فيin الرِقِّbondage رِقِّbondage غَليليmy burning thirst
مَطَلَتهُshe delayed it بِالوِردِwith the drink وَالوِردُand the drink نَهبُfree for the taking
I died of anguish in bondage—the bondage of my burning thirst;
I died of anguish in the softness of my confinement
She delayed its drink, though the drink was free for the taking.
My wish in roses and roses ravaged
قالَsaid مَنone whom لاnot أُحِبُّI love ماwhat لاnot أُحِبُّI love
وَحَديثُand the talk البَغيضِof the loathed one بُغضٌhatred وَكِذبُand lies
One I do not love said what I do not love;
He who does not love me said what he does not love
And the loathed one's talk is hatred and lies.
And the talk of the hated one is hatred and lies
وَلِحَينيand to my doom لَهُhe has لِسانٌa tongue وَماand not ليI have
أَناI ياO قَومِmy people لِلَّذيfor what قالَhe said قَلبُa heart
And, to my doom, he has a tongue, while I—
And for my present he has a tongue but I have not
I, O my people—have no heart for what he said.
O people I am for what my heart said
واجِبٌobligatory شُكرُهُthanking him عَلَيَّupon me كماas ظَنhe thought (continued)
نَcompletes 'he thought' وَعِنديand I have عَلَيهِtoward him غَيظٌanger وَعَتبُand reproach
I owe him thanks, as he thought,
I owe him gratitude as he thought
yet I harbor anger and reproach toward him.
But I have anger and reproach for him
جاءَنيhe came to me مُمرِضاًcausing illness وَأَصعَبُand the hardest ماwhat قَدalready
جاءَنيhas come to me أَنthat يَقولُhe says جئتُI came أَطِبُّI heal
He came to me making me ill; and the hardest thing that has
He came to me sick and most difficult
befallen me is his saying, 'I came to heal.'
What he came to say was I came to cure you
