When his trust in his days was strongest,

they betrayed him—and days are ever treacherous.

The days did not safeguard his days,

nor did fate fear his authority.

If you ask who he was and what he was like,

then he was every good thing.

He died, and the people died after him,

yet gratitude did not extinguish his kindness.

And Noah's lifespan was not his,

but his generosity engulfed Noah's flood.

Close, to the world and its people,

your eye, if you do not see its man.

You left remnants of wealth; everyone who

    beheld them repeated his melodies.

Then its calamities lopped his spreading tree,

    and afterward snapped his branches.

His world, O his world! You are not, in

your wronging of this man, human.

And a young man's ample means vanished—

means for justice, stretched as far as he could.

If I weep for him, my eye, in fear,

    enjoins secrecy on its eyelids.

And would that it had proclaimed its sorrows,

so that the proclamation might bear its sorrows.

And in concealing my love for him, I was

like a believer concealing his faith.

    Whoever makes time his garment,

then how can he find its colors strange?
