قالواthey said جَرىflowed قَلَميmy pen فيin غَيرِother than مَدحِكُمُpraise of you
قالوا جَرى قَلَمي في غَيرِ مَدحِكُمُ
لاno وَالَّذيby Him who عَلَّمَtaught الإِنسانَhumankind بِالقَلَمِby the pen
لا وَالَّذي عَلَّمَ الإِنسانَ بِالقَلَمِ
They said my pen had written on matters other than your praise.
They said my pen flowed in praise of others,
No, by Him who taught humankind by the pen!
No! By Him who taught man with the pen,
وَماand never خَلَوتُI was alone بِذِكراكُمwith remembrance of you وَكانَand there was مَعيwith me
وَما خَلَوتُ بِذِكراكُم وَكانَ مَعي
ثانٍa second يُثَلِّثُmakes three ذِكراكُمremembrance of you سِوىexcept الكَرَمِgenerosity
ثانٍ يُثَلِّثُ ذِكراكُم سِوى الكَرَمِ
Nor, alone with your memory, have I had beside me
And I was never alone with your mention, there was
A second to make three with your memory, save generosity.
Another who made your mention a third, except generosity,
فَاِستَعمِلواso make use مِنهُof it ماwhatever قَدalready كانَwas حاضِرَهُits available part
فَاِستَعمِلوا مِنهُ ما قَد كانَ حاضِرَهُ
فَالجودُfor generosity لَيسَis not عَلىregarding عِرضٍhonor بِمُتَّهَمِsuspect
فَالجودُ لَيسَ عَلى عِرضٍ بِمُتَّهَمِ
So use whatever of it was already at hand;
So employ that part of it which was ready,
For generosity is not suspect where honor is concerned.
For generosity is not with suspicion blamed,
لاlet ... not يَقطَعَنever sever مُفسِدٌa corrupter فيin المَجدِglory عُلقَةَthe bond ماthat which
لا يَقطَعَن مُفسِدٌ في المَجدِ عُلقَةَ ما
بَينَbetween الأَياديbenefactions وَبَينَand between الجودِgenerosity مِنof رَحِمِkinship
بَينَ الأَيادي وَبَينَ الجودِ مِن رَحِمِ
Let no corrupter of glory ever sever the bond
Let no corrupter cut off in glory the ties
Of kinship between benefactions and generosity.
Between the hands and generosity of a womb,
هَبواsuppose خَواطِرَناour thoughts فيin جاهِلِيَّتِهاtheir age of ignorance
هَبوا خَواطِرَنا في جاهِلِيَّتِها
فَلَمfor ... did not تَضِعbe lost حُرُماتُsanctities الأَشهُرِالحُرُمِthe sacred months
فَلَم تَضِع حُرُماتُ الأَشهُرِالحُرُمِ
Suppose our thoughts are in their age of ignorance;
They let go our thoughts in their ignorance,
For the sanctity of the sacred months was not lost.
So the sanctities of the sacred months did not place
كُلُّall الزَمانِtime عَلَيهاfor them أَشهُرٌmonths حُرُمٌsacred
كُلُّ الزَمانِ عَلَيها أَشهُرٌ حُرُمٌ
بِكُمthrough you فَكُنَّso they were بِهَذاin this المُلكِkingdom فيin حَرَمِa sanctuary
بِكُم فَكُنَّ بِهَذا المُلكِ في حَرَمِ
All time is sacred months for them,
All time to them is sacred months,
Through you; thus, in this kingdom, they were in sanctuary.
With you, so be in this kingdom inviolate.
