لاdo not تَرمِshoot بِالقَولِwith words سَهماًan arrow رُبَّماperhaps قَتَلاit killed
Take your talk out of my hearing, though it never entered.
Do not shoot an arrow with words—it may kill.

Where is a friend? Yet a friend, if
he does not understand love, turns against what he does not know.
وَلاand do not تَقُلsay لِمwhy أَحَبَّloved المَرءُthe man مَظلَمَةًan injustice

And do not ask, 'Why did the man love being wronged?'
Rather, do not blame him if he says, 'Why did he act justly?'
وَماand not يَخِفُّweighs lightly عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart حَديثُكَyour talk ليto me

And your talk to me lies heavy on my heart—
No, by Him who created man and the mountain!
لَأَجلُوَنَّI shall surely unveil عَلَيكَto you الحُسنَthe beauty مِنfrom قَمَريmy moon

I shall surely unveil to you the beauty of my moon,
until my beloved is truly Ibn Jala—plain for all to see.
تَسخوyou are lavish بِعَذليwith reproaching me وَعُذّاليand my reproachers عَلىin عَذليreproaching me

You lavish blame on me; and my reproachers, in blaming me,
are the generous ones, while my beloveds are the misers.
