الصَمتُsilence أَسلَمُsafer لَكِنbut إِنif أَرَدتَyou wished دَميmy blood
أَلاnot to يَفيضَspill فَسامِحنيthen pardon me أَفِضlet me pour forth كَلِميmy words
Silence is safer—but if you wish my blood
Silence is safer, but if you wish my blood
not to flow, then pardon me as I pour forth my words.
not to spill, then pardon me: let me pour forth my words.
بَينيbetween me وَبَينَand between وُجوديmy existence اللَهُGod يَحكُمُjudges ليin my favor
عَلَيهِagainst it ياoh لَيتَنيwould that I were لاno شَيءَthing فيin العَدَمِnonexistence
Between me and my very being, may God judge for me
Between me and my existence, God judges in my favor
against it. Would that I were nothing in nonbeing—
against it. Oh, would that I were nothing in nonexistence!
وَلاnor حَديثيmy speech وَلاnor دَهريmy lifetime وَحادِثَهُand its happenings
وَلاnor هُموميmy worries وَلاnor وَهميmy illusion وَلاnor هِمَميmy aspirations
and as for my tale: neither my age nor what befell in it,
Nor my speech, nor my lifetime and its happenings,
nor my cares, nor my fancies, nor my aspirations,
Nor my worries, nor my illusion, nor my aspirations,
وَلاnor حُساميmy sword الَّذيwhich لِلعَجزِbecause of helplessness أَغمِدُهُI sheathe it
وَلاand not أُجَرِّدُI unsheathe فيin الشَكوىcomplaint سِوىexcept قَلَميmy pen
nor my sword, which helplessness makes me sheath;
Nor my sword, which I sheathe out of helplessness,
in complaint I unsheathe nothing but my pen.
Nor do I unsheathe in complaint anything but my pen,
وَلاnor اللَياليthe nights الَّتيwhich نيرانُهاtheir fires اِتَّقَدَتblazed
بِالفِكرِwith thought لَمdid not يَعلُrise high فيin الدُنياthe world سِوىexcept عَلَميmy banner
Nor the nights whose fires were kindled
Nor the nights whose fires blazed
by thought—nothing rose in this world but my standard.
with thought; nothing rose high in the world but my banner.
الشَرُّevil فيin يَقظَتيmy wakefulness بِالعَينِwith the eye أُبصِرُهُI see it
وَالخَيرُand good بِالقَلبِwith the heart قَدmay أَلفاهُI find it فيin الحُلُمِa dream
In waking, I behold evil with my own eyes,
In my waking hours, I see evil with my eye;
while goodness my heart has found in dreams.
And good I may find with my heart in a dream.
إِذاif الصَباحُmorning بِهِwith it فيin اللَيلِthe night بارَكَنيblessed me
فَالنورُthen light أَقبَحُuglier فيin عَينيmy eye مِنَthan الظُلَمِdarkness
If morning blesses me with it in the night,
If morning blesses me with it in the night,
then light is uglier to my eyes than darkness.
then light is uglier in my eyes than darkness.
عَثَرتُI stumbled فيin كُلِّevery رَأيٍjudgment قادَled نَحوَكُمُtoward you (plural)
وَالعَثرُand stumbling فيin الرَأيِjudgment لَيسَis not العَثرُstumbling فيin القَدَمِthe foot
I stumbled in every judgment that led toward you;
I stumbled in every judgment that led me toward you;
a misstep in judgment is no mere stumble of the foot.
And a stumble in judgment is not a stumble of the foot.
