She complains to him that her companion

has shunned her ever since he shunned her.

She hid from his sight, concealing herself

from him, and fearing he might see her.

And even if he possessed the cure

for what she complained of, he would not cure her.

    And were she presented before

his eyes, he would behold her and cure her.

Do you hate her while I love her?

Far be it! May she never attain her wishes!

May she be your ransom—but how does your rank

among the heights compare with her sacrifice?

How could one ask the heaven of your glory

to have her dust hung upon it?

May your eminence endure, for whenever

it endures for her, her eminence endures.

It is an estrangement in life; no

heartache have I from it save this.

    لَ وَلَيتَ شِعرِيَ ما اِقتَضاها

    And I revere your glory too much to speak;

yet would that I knew what prompted it!

    Convey your approval, for

despite her displeasure, her satisfaction lies in it.

O her dawn, may they never be turned away from

you—the reins of her journey by night.

And she shall surely dream, throughout the nights

of your reproach, forever of their slumber,

until there sleeps upon their beds

    the night-talker from their darkness,

and their sun dies within them, drowned,

    and their forenoon mourns them.

So when I make my way through them as far as

the hour before dawn, their dusk envelops me.

    And night, unless ended by

the light of your smile, will never end.
