    On her cheek is a serpent of her musk,

    Of loveliest blackness in the silvery expanse.

    From many a serpent's bite I flee,

    Yet this one flees from my bite.

    It keeps my gaze away from itself, just as

    It keeps my eyelids from closing.

    لا أَشكُرُ المُغضي عَلى البُغضِ

    And I thank the one who lowers his eyes for his love;

    I do not thank the one who lowers his eyes for hatred.

    So do not trust his lowered gaze to speak for him—

    For where is the gentleness of the downcast eye?
