ياO بَحرُsea إِنّاindeed we وَقَدand already جَدَّgrew intense الغَليلُthe burning thirst بِناwithin us
مِنsince يَومِthe day of بَينِكَyour departure مَقذوفونَhurled فيinto اللجَجِthe depths
O sea, we—with burning thirst now raging within us—
O sea, we are indeed exhausted
have been hurled into the depths since the day of your departure.
Since the day we were cast into your surging waves
ماnot أَنتَyou حوشيتَmay you be spared تَحتَbeneath التُربِthe earth فيin حَرَجٍdistress
بَلrather نَحنُwe وَاللَهِby God فَوقَabove التُربِthe earth فيin حَرَجِdistress
You are not—may you be spared—in distress beneath the earth;
You are not constrained, buried beneath the soil
rather, by God, we above the earth are in distress.
Rather we, by Allah, are above the soil, constrained
تَبكيweep عَلَيكَfor you عُيونٌeyes أَنتَyou قُرَّتُهاtheir delight
وَماand not قَضىhas fulfilled الحَقُّwhat is due باكيone who weeps for البَحرُthe sea بِالخُلجِwith streams
Eyes weep for you; you are their delight.
Eyes weep for you, you are their comfort
And one who weeps for the sea with streams has not given it its due.
Yet the Truth has not decreed the sea to cry in stillness
فيin كُلِّevery شدَّةِhardship of دَهرٍtime لَمdid not تَزَلyou cease to be فَرَجاًa relief
فَأَعظَمَso may He magnify اللَهُGod أَجرَthe reward of الناسِthe people فيfor الفَرَجِthe relief
In every hardship of time, you never ceased to be a relief.
In every tightness of time, you remain relief
So may God magnify the people's reward for the loss of their relief.
So may Allah increase the reward of people in relief
