أَأَحبابَناO our beloved ones هَلdo ...? تَسمَعونَyou hear عَلىacross النَوىthe distance
أَأَحبابَنا هَل تَسمَعونَ عَلى النَوى
تَحِيَّةَa greeting عانٍa captive أَوor شَكِيَّةَa complaint عاتِبِone who reproaches
تَحِيَّةَ عانٍ أَو شَكِيَّةَ عاتِبِ
O our beloved ones, do you hear across the distance
Do our loved ones hear, over the sand dunes,
a captive's greeting, or a reproacher's complaint?
The greeting of a complainer or the reproach of a blamer?
وَلَوand if حَمَلَتcarried ريحُwind الشَمالِthe north إِلَيكُمُto you
وَلَو حَمَلَت ريحُ الشَمالِ إِلَيكُمُ
كَلاماًwords طَلَبناwe would seek مِثلَهُthe like of it فيin الجَنائِبِthe southerly winds
كَلاماً طَلَبنا مِثلَهُ في الجَنائِبِ
And if the north wind bore to you
And if the north wind brought you
words, we would seek their like in the southerly winds.
Words we sought in the south winds
