O one who, when he takes charge of the lands, has only

that unfurled banner as his writ of appointment.

Let him be met only with chains and sword-blades—

he who, however he meets you, becomes a captive.

You clothed them in darkness at midday,

and filled them with light in the hour of darkness.

And you kindled them with fire; for they were, for the flood

of foes, an oven for their doom.

For their wounds, the spears become probes,

and thrusting cautery, and battle dust a medicinal powder.
