ياO طَرفُeye ماwhat لَكَwith you ساهِدٌsleepless فيover راقِدِone asleep
ياO قَلبُheart ماwhat لَكَwith you راغِبٌyearning فيfor زاهِدِone indifferent
O eye, why are you sleepless over one who sleeps?
O eyes, why do you sleep when I lie awake?
O heart, why do you long for one indifferent?
O heart, why do you shun when I aspire?
مَنwho يَشتَريbuys عُمريmy life الرَخيصَcheap جَميعَهُall of it
مِنof وَصلِكَunion with you الغاليprecious بِيَومٍfor a day واحِدِone
Who will buy my cheap life, all of it,
Who will buy my whole worthless life
for a single day of precious union with you?
For one day with your dear love's fire?
عاتَبتُهُI reproached him فَتَوَرَّدَتso grew rosy وَجَناتُهُhis cheeks
وَالقَلبُand the heart صَخرٌrock لاnot يَلينُsoftens لِقاصِدِto a suitor
I reproached him, so his cheeks grew rosy,
I chided him, his cheeks turned rosy red,
yet his heart is rock, unyielding to a suitor.
Yet my heart's rock, not softened when chided.
فَنَظَرتُso I looked مِنfrom ذيthese (cheeks) فيupon حَريرٍsilk ناعِمٍsoft
وَضَرَبتُand I struck مِنfrom ذاthis (heart) فيupon حَديدٍiron بارِدِcold
So in these cheeks I beheld soft silk,
I saw smooth silk on one, cold iron donned
and in this heart I struck cold iron.
By another - both fates I derided.
