    Nothing on earth excels save al-Shā—

    —m; and spare me all the other horizons.

    O winds of al-Shām, you are a messenger

    who takes pains to serve lovers.

    And when you visit my burning thirst with a breeze,

    it takes the place of an embrace within my breast.

    فَاِركُضي فيهِ مِثلَ رَكُضِ العِتاقِ

    For you, my tears form fields of longing;

    so gallop there as thoroughbreds gallop.

    فَاِجهَدي يا هُمومُ في الإِنفاقِ

    My eye has stored up treasures of tears;

    so strive, O sorrows, to spend them.

    So it is as though the dewdrops were a healer's blown spittle,

    and as though the rustling were the healer's voice.

    And peace upon the nights gone by,

    from one tormented by the nights that remain.

    إِنَّ قَلبي إِلَيهِ بِالأَشواقِ

    Console me with talk of al-Shām;

    indeed, my heart turns toward it with longing.

    Remembrance has pictured it before my eye, as though I

    were strolling there with my eyes.

    May the clouds never let their greetings to it lapse,

    greetings that clothe the bough in the fine silk of leaves.

    May God torment separation with separation,

    and make parting taste the flavor of parting.
