My messenger returned, so I said, 'What happened?'
My messenger returned, so I asked "What happened?"
He said, 'Matters that take long to explain.'
He said "Matters too long to explain."
مَتىwhen رَأَيتَyou saw المُحِبَّthe lover مُلتَفِتاًpaying heed
إِلىto الأَحاديثِthe words مِنfrom ذَويthose with النُصحِcounsel
When have you ever seen a lover paying heed
When did you see a lover paying attention
To the words of those who offer counsel?
To the advice of well-wishers?
أَنَّبتَyou reproached ظُلماًunjustly وَلَستُand I am not أَسمَحُI allow أَنthat
تَقولَyou say هَذاthis فَلَستُfor I am not بِالسَمحِlenient
You reproached me unjustly, and I will not let
You have wronged me, yet I'm not inclined
You say this, for I am not lenient.
To say "You're wrong," since I'm not vindictive.
ماnot جِئتَyou came إِلّاexcept بِالمِلحِwith the salt تَقصِدُyou intend أَنthat

You came with nothing but salt, intending that
You came only with salt, intending that
The salt should dissolve me in the mouth of the wound.
The salt dissolve me in the mouth of my wound.
