تَوَهَّمَهُimagined him قَلبيmy heart فَأَصبَحَso became خَدُّهُhis cheek
تَوَهَّمَهُ قَلبي فَأَصبَحَ خَدُّهُ
وَفيهِand on it مَكانَat the place of الوَهمِthe imagining مِنfrom نَظَريmy gaze أُثْرُa trace
وَفيهِ مَكانَ الوَهمِ مِن نَظَري أُثْرُ
My heart imagined him, and his cheek came to bear
My heart imagined him, so his cheek became
a trace of my gaze at the site of that imagining.
In it from my gaze, in place of fancy, a trace
وَمَرَّand he passed بِقَلبيthrough my heart خاطِراًas a thought فَجَرَحتُهُso I wounded him
وَمَرَّ بِقَلبي خاطِراً فَجَرَحتُهُ
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see جِسماًa body قَطُّever يَجرِحُهُwounds it الفِكرُthought
وَلَم أَرَ جِسماً قَطُّ يَجرِحُهُ الفِكرُ
And he passed through my heart as a thought, so I wounded him.
And a thought passed through my heart, so I wounded it
And I have never seen a body that thought could wound.
Yet never did I see a body that thought could scar
