يَكادُalmost يَطيرُflies مِنfrom شَوقٍlonging فُؤاديmy heart
يَكادُ يَطيرُ مِن شَوقٍ فُؤادي
وَلَكِنbut ماnot تُطاوِعُهُyield to it الضُلوعُthe ribs
وَلَكِن ما تُطاوِعُهُ الضُلوعُ
My heart almost takes flight from longing,
My heart soars nearly takes flight from yearning
But my ribs will not yield to it.
But these ribs obey it not in its endeavour
كَأَنَّas though الشَمسَthe sun لَماwhen غِبتَyou went away غابَتvanished
كَأَنَّ الشَمسَ لَما غِبتَ غابَت
عَنِfrom الدُنياthe world فَلَيسَso there is no لَهاfor it طُلوعُrising
عَنِ الدُنيا فَلَيسَ لَها طُلوعُ
As though the sun, when you went away, had vanished
As though when you departed, set, the sun
From the world, never to rise again.
And so rose never from the world again
