يَقولُsays خَليلِيَmy friend قَولَthe words of الخَليلthe Friend (Abraham)
لَآزَرِهِto his Azar فيconcerning اِتِّخاذِadopting الصَنَمِthe idol
My friend speaks the words of the Friend,
My friend says to his friend as Khalil said
To his Azar, concerning the adoption of an idol:
To his companion in making an idol
أَياO أَبَتيmy father ظالِماًwrongfully قَدindeed عَبَدworshipped (continued)
تَyou (completing the verb) ماwhat لَيسَdoes not يُغنيكَbenefit you أَعمىblind أَصَمdeaf
“O my father, wrongfully you have worshipped
Oh my father, you wrongfully worshipped
What cannot benefit you—blind and deaf.”
What cannot hear or see, blind and deaf
كَذاlikewise أَناI أَعبُدُworship دونَrather than الكِراthe generous (continued)
مِcompletes “the generous” مَنone who لَيسَthere is no فيin خُلُقَيهِhis two traits كَرَمgenerosity
Likewise I worship, rather than the generous,
So too I worship apart from the Noble One
One with no generosity in either of his two traits.
Who has no nobility in His creation
فَلاso neither هُوَhe يُؤبِسُcauses despair (uncertain reading) مِنهُof him بِلاwith a “no”
وَلاand neither هُوَhe يُؤنِسُreassures مِنهُfrom him نَعَمa “yes”
So he neither makes me despair of him with a “no,”
He brings from it no affliction or ill
Nor reassures me with a “yes” from him.
Nor comfort or bounty when times are well
