تَفديmay ransom اللَياليthe nights الَّتيthat بِالبُعدِthrough separation تُسخِطُنيdisplease me
تَفدي اللَيالي الَّتي بِالبُعدِ تُسخِطُني
تِلكَthose اللَياليthe nights الَّتيthat بِالقُربِthrough nearness تُرضينيplease me
تِلكَ اللَيالي الَّتي بِالقُربِ تُرضيني
May the nights that displease me through separation ransom
The nights I despise are those spent far from you,
those nights that please me through nearness.
While the nights that bring me joy are those by your side.

With you they used to make me laugh—so may God preserve them;
In your company they brought laughter, by God's grace,
then they began to make me weep—may God not preserve them.
Now, without you, by God, they bring me to tears.

Ah, how distant it is—a ruinous goal for longing—
Oh, your distance is the epitome of yearning,
from Egypt’s lowlands to the heights of Jayrun!
From the depths of Egypt to the heights of Gerona.

You entrusted to my hearing the hidden remembrance of you;
I confided to my hearing your name spoken softly,
so take the pearls of my tears, unconcealed.
So here is my tear, no longer a hidden pearl.
