دَعِleave off اللَومَblame ياO عاذِليmy reproacher
فَماfor … not أَنتَyou بِالعادِلِjust
Leave off your blame, O you who blame me;
Leave off blame, O my reproacher,
for you are not fair.
for you are not just.
وَلاand do not تُكثِرَنَّheap up (emphatic) المَلامreproach
وَأَقصِرand desist فَهَذاfor this الكَلامtalk
And do not heap reproach upon me.
And do not heap up reproach;
Desist—for this speech,
and desist, for this talk
عَلىto الصَبِّthe lovesick lover مِثلُlike الكِلامwounds
وَلَوand even if قُمتَyou stood فيin كُلِّevery عامyear
to the impassioned lover, is like wounds.
is like wounds to the lovesick lover.
Even if you stood there year after year,
And even if, each year, you stood
تَلومُyou reproach إِلىuntil القابِلِthe next year
فَماthen … not أَناI بِالقابِلِone who accepts
blaming me until the year to come,
reproaching me until the next year,
I am not one to accept.
I would still not accept it.
