دعleave عَينَهُhis eye لِعَفائِهاto its ruin
فَشِفاؤُهُfor his healing فيin دائِهاits sickness
Leave his eye to its ruin;
Leave her eyes to their inflammation
for his healing lies in its sickness.
For their cure is in their disease
العَينُthe eye مِنamong أَعدائِهِhis enemies
وَالقَلبُand the heart مِنamong أَعدائِهاits enemies
The eye is among his enemies,
The eye is safe from its enemies
and the heart is among its enemies.
While the heart is not safe from its own
هَذاthis وَنيارنُand the fires (apparent misspelling) الهَوىlove
مَشبوبَةٌkindled مِنfrom مائِهاits water
All this, while the fires of love
The passion is like midday thirst
are kindled by its water.
Quenched from its own waters

ميعادُappointed time وَقتِtime ضِيائِهاits radiance
And your faces—not its dawn—
And your faces, their dawns
are the appointed hour for its radiance.
Are the tryst of their shining hour

فيin حُسنِهاher beauty وَغِنائِهاand her song
Moonlike, a turtledove,
Moon-like, moon-like
in her beauty and her song.
In their beauty and melody
القَلبُthe heart كارِهُhating نَأيِهاher distance
وَالسَمعُand hearing عاشِقُadoring نايِهاher flute
The heart hates her distance,
The heart loathes their distance
and the ear adores her flute.
While the ears love their music
وَلَقَدand indeed رَضيتُI have consented بِقَتلَتيto my slaying
إِنif كانَis ذاكَthat بِرَايِهاaccording to her wish
And indeed, I have consented to my slaying,
And I'd accept being slain by her
if that is her wish.
If that was by her own decree
