إِذاif كَفَرَwas ungrateful for النُعمىthe kindness اللَئيمُthe ignoble man المُزَنَّدُthe worthless one
فَلاthen let not سَتَرَconceal الجودَgenerosity الكَريمُthe generous man المُفَنَّدُthe censured one
If the worthless wretch is ungrateful for kindness,
When the ungrateful scoundrel shows ingratitude,
let not the generous man, though censured, conceal his bounty.
The generous soul's bounty will not cease its plenitude.
كَفاكَsuffices you حَصادُthe harvest of الأَجرِreward عَمّاfor what زَرَعتَهُyou sowed it
وَماand not كُلُّevery مَزروعٍsown thing مِنَof البَذرِthe seed يُحصَدُis harvested
The harvest of reward for what you sowed is enough for you;
The harvest of reward suffices for what you have sown,
and not every seed sown is harvested.
Not every planted seed can fully have grown.
وَحَسبُكَand enough for you أَنthat يَلقاكَhe finds you لِلجودِfor bounty مَقصِداًa destination
إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنthere is فيهِin him لِشُكرِكَfor thanking you مَقصِدُan intention
And it is enough for you that he finds you a destination for bounty,
It should suffice you that one comes seeking your grace,
even if he has no intention of thanking you.
Though not seeking to thank you or praise.
تَرَدَّدَhe hesitated فيin شُكرِالصَنيعِthanks for the kindness وَإِنَّهُand indeed he
وَأَنتَwhile you إِذاwhen اِستَجداكَhe asks you for bounty لاnot تَتَرَدَّدُyou hesitate
He hesitated to thank you for the kindness—indeed he did—
He wavers in thanking for kindness, yet still,
while you, when he asks you for bounty, do not hesitate.
You when called upon, do not waver, but fulfill.
سَيَكفيكَwill suffice you مِنهُfrom him أَنthat يَموتَhe dies وَذِكرُهُand his memory
وَأَنَّكَand that you فيin دارِthe abode of الثَناءِpraise مُخَلَّدُimmortalized
It will suffice you that he and his memory perish,
It will suffice you that he dies with your name remembered,
and that you are immortalized in the abode of praise.
While you are in the abode of praise forever engendered.
وَلَوand even if رُمتَyou sought تَقديراًrestraint in giving لَماthen not كُنتَyou would be قادِراًable
وَهَلand does يَترُكُabandon الإِنسانُthe human being ماwhat يَتَعَوَّدُhe is accustomed to
And even if you sought to limit your giving, you could not;
Had you sought a measure, you'd not have the power,
and does a person abandon what he is accustomed to?
Can a man leave what he's accustomed to and used to for an hour?
عَطاؤُكَyour giving فَضلٌa grace لاnot نَقومُwe do justice بِحَمدِهِto its praise
إِذاif كُنتَyou are مِمَّنamong those who حينَwhen تُحمَدُyou are praised تَحمَدُyou praise
Your giving is a grace we cannot adequately praise,
Your gift is a favor we cannot praise enough,
if you are among those who, when praised, give praise.
For when praised, you yourself begin to blush.
