If the gazelle comes visiting by night,
When the gazelle roams as a visitor
do not trust the roaring lion.
Do not trust the visiting lion

But ask the night to veil you,
But ask the night for concealment over you
even if you trust it, unbelieving as it is.
Even if you deem it an infidel

May dawn doze, if only for an hour,
Perhaps dawn will slumber even for an hour
during which its star sleeps while on its course.
In which its star sleeps travelling

O night, if you grant me this favor,
So O night if you lend me it with a hand
you will find me mindful of it and thankful.
You will find me thanking and remembering it

And if they say, “We know it as an unbeliever,”
And if it is said we know him an infidel
I say, “No—but yes, a dawn-breaking sinner.”
I say no, but yes indeed a debauchee
فَياso O لَيلُnight ماnot اِفتَرَقَparted العاشِقانِthe two lovers

O night, the two lovers never part
So O night the lovers do not separate
when you are present between them.
When you are present between them

فَلاso let not يَرجِعَنever return واصِليthe one who joins me هاجِراforsaking
For my forsaker has come to me in union;
My visitor came joining me
let the one who joins me not return a forsaker.
So may my joining one not return emigrant

Through him you quenched my burning thirst as he arrived;
You quenched my anguish visiting
do not bereave me of him as he departs.
So do not make me bereft with him leaving

وَأَحفَظand I preserve حَديثَthe discourse of الهَوىlove طاهِراpure
And let me exchange with him complaints of separation,
And let me confide to it the agony of parting
and keep love's discourse pure.
And preserve the love talk immaculate
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you تَعرِفُlearn سِرَّthe secret of الغَرامِpassion

Perhaps you will learn passion's secret,
Maybe you know the secret of passion
and come to excuse the afflicted.
So you become excusing toward the afflicted
وَتَعشَقَand you love بَدرَكَyour full moon عِشقيmy love for البُدورَthe full moons

And love your full moon as I love full moons,
And you fall in love with its full moon like my love
and return, like me, bewildered by them.
And you return confused by them like me

So do not send dawn before nightfall
nor make the last follow the first.
Nor follow the first with the last

How many a bird within your fringes
For how many a bird in your margins
you use to torment my fluttering heart!
Makes my fluttering heart race

O night, may you always subdue it.
So O night you remain breaking it for him

And how much you have for a person of hands
black as your color, with sorrow veiling his mind.
Whose colour overwhelms the thoughts

In condemning you we believe the Manichaean,
We believe in blaming the curser
though in what he says he is an unbeliever.
Even if his words are infidel's

Do you act in secret, bringing ruin through a deed
Whispering of a matter with which
in which morning stands unveiled?
Dawn establishes a traveller

And you have spent no night except amid suspicion,
And it did not spend the night except on suspicion
at which we lower our eyes in shame.
For which the onlooker is embarrassed

Had morning not washed you away from us,
So had the dawn not washed you of us
you would not be clean of filth.
You would not have been immaculate

And were it not for the radiance of the most august one's face,
And were it not for the appearance of the terminator of bashfulness
your face would remain scowling thus.
Making you smile persist as dazzling

He brought you back the day he stirred up dust,
It brings you back the day it excites racers
with a gallop that stilled the rebel.
With which it calms the agitated

and restored to you, despite the morn-
And it returns your horizon to you despite dawn
ing, your horizon, manifest in his dusky spears.
Appearing from its bleach

And a hewing blow of his has restored
And beating for it the neighing one restored
Najir for us in Qumah's two months.
For us two months of drought by its downpour
فَجِسمٌso a body تَراهُyou see it بِهِby it واقِعاًfallen
وَهامٌand heads تَراهُyou see them بِهِby it طائِراًflying
So you see a body felled by it,
So a body you see it falling on it
and heads sent flying by it.
And a raptor you see it flying by it
وَيَجنُبُand leads alongside ريحُthe wind of العِنانِthe reins الدُبورَthe west wind

The wind of the reins leads the west wind alongside,
And the tailwind avoids the rear
and brings forth what cuts off the last remnant.
So it produces what severs continuity

And how often it has stirred the dust at rest,
And how much at rest it moves for dust
and stilled a survivor beneath it.
So it calms what was under it buried
وَيَجبُرُand mends ناهِضُthe soaring force of هِمّاتِهِhis aspirations

And its lofty aspirations' attempter repairs
glory be yours—this languishing age.
For you is the glory O the apathetic time

So may you always command its good,
So you have persisted commanding good
and may you always command its evil.
And you have persisted forbidding evil

God has indeed aided the religion of guidance
Indeed God granted victory to the religion of guidance
by aiding King al-Nasir.
By granting victory to the King Al-Nasir

So we do not fear for his thicket
So we do not fear for its jungle
when he shelters, crouching in his thicket.
If the coward was in its jungle

I do not rank it even tenth beside him.
I do not consider him for it a companion

So do not trouble yourself to ask him;
So do not take on a question for it
he will spare you that, taking the initiative swiftly.
Its beginning will suffice you responsive

Does the grass of night need a sower
Does the plant of darkness need a planter for it?
for it, or heaven's well a digger?
And the heart of the sky a digger?

Or else die thirsty withered

For whoever seeks provisions from the hands of the base
For whoever persists of the palms of villains
will live his life without seeing a provider.
Lives his lifetime not seeing ease

And who could lower his petitioners' standing?
And whoever lowered the worth of his request
For I have always remained his proud petitioner.
I have not ceased making ample his request

When they ask a withholding, powerless man,
If they asked a preventer powerless
I ask, through him, a generous, capable giver.
I asked through it a Giver Able

Thus he first surpassed their words,
So He fulfilled their word first
and finally surpassed his own.
And fulfilled His word last

People have seen his slave's departure;
The people saw the emigration of His slave
let them not deem him a deserter of his master.
So let them not see him for it emigrant

may the poet never lose the poet.
So the poet is not devoid of poetry

You would not find for them traces

I saw my time has all passed
as a night journey that brought me thus, gaunt.
Travelling, bringing me thus withered

Had I not approached his face, I would not have won
And had I not wanted his face I would not have won
a dawn that I behold shining.
A dawn I gaze at flaming

I have an envier whom you have enriched,
And I have an envier whom you have profited
and whom you are making a loser.
While you make him a loser

And his earnest elaboration has grown ugly;
And he fared badly in earnestness his overdoing
he repeats his words with guile.
Repeating his words scheming

How often he has been alone with his devils,
And how much has he been emptied of his devils
then set talk running about us, wickedly.
So he conducted the talk with us debauched
وَذَكَّرَand reminded بيof me فَمَthe mouth of صَرفِthe vicissitudes of الزَمانِTime

He reminded the mouth of Time's vicissitudes of me,
And he reminded me of the course of time
thus setting a gaping mouth upon my flesh.
So he tempted with my flesh a mouth gaping

And God looked to the Muslims
through your watching over their affairs.
That you were regarding their matter observing

I did not blame them for dealing unjustly with me;
And I did not beg them to wrong me
even so, I would have excused them.
And if that, I would have been for them excusing

For it was not he who judged unjustly who wronged me,
So he who wrongs in his rule is not wronged
but he who drove the wrongdoer to it.
But rather who coerces the coercer
