لئِنif indeed كانَis قَلبيmy heart عَبداًa slave لَكُمto you
فَماyet not كُلُّevery عَبدٍslave يَلَذُّrelishes الهَواناhumiliation
If indeed my heart is a slave to you,
If my heart is your slave,
Yet not every slave relishes humiliation.
Not every slave finds humiliation sweet.
وَغُصنٍand a bough بَداappeared قَدُّهُhis stature صَعدَةًa spear shaft
وَقَدand indeed أَثمَرَbore fruit اللَحظَthe glance فيهاupon it سِناناa spearhead
And a bough whose stature appeared a spear shaft,
A branch seemed smooth to the touch,
And which bore a glance upon it as a spearhead;
Yet it bore fruit with thorns.
وَبَدرٍand a full moon تَرىyou see خَدَّهُhis cheek جَمرَةًan ember
وَقَدand indeed طَلَعَrose الشَعرُthe hair فيهاupon it دُخاناsmoke
And a full moon whose cheek you see as an ember,
The moon’s face looked like hot embers,
With hair that has risen upon it like smoke.
Yet hair sprouted on it like smoke.
يُهَدِّدُنيthreatens me بِدَوامِwith the continuance of الصُدودِrejection
فَقُلتُso I said وَهَلand has ...? غَيرُother than ماwhat خِفتُI feared كاناhappened
He threatens me with perpetual rejection,
You threaten me with unending disdain,
So I said, 'And has anything happened but what I feared?'
Yet I say, was what I feared anything but this?
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas ليَfor me قَبلَهُbefore him مُهجَةٌa heart
فَماyet not تَرَكَleft الهَمُّsorrow فيهاin it مَكاناroom
And before him I had a heart,
Once I had a loving companion,
Yet sorrow left no room within it.
Yet worry left no place in her.
