خَزَنتُI stored مِنsome of دُرِّهِhis pearls إِذsince لَمdid not أَجِدI find أَحَداًanyone
سِواكَexcept you ياO مَنyou whose نَداهُhis bounty غَيرُnot مُختَزَنِhoarded
I stored some of his pearls, since I found no one
I hoarded his pearls when I found no one
Save you, O you whose bounty is never hoarded.
Except you, O he whose call is never hoarded
أَشتاقُكُمI long for you وَدواعيand the urgings of الوَجدِpassionate longing تُنهِضُنيspur me
إِلَيكُمُtoward you وَعَواديand the calamities of الدَهرِtime تُقعِدُنيhold me back
I long for you, and the urgings of passion spur me
I yearn for you, and the causes of passion rouse me
Toward you, while the blows of time hold me back.
Towards you, while the turns of fate hold me back
فَذِكرُكُمso remembrance of you مَعَdespite بُعدِthe remoteness of الدارِthe dwelling يُؤنِسُنيkeeps me company
وَخَوفُand fear of بَينِكُمُparting from you فيin القَلبِthe heart يوحِشُنيmakes me lonely
So remembrance of you keeps me company, though the dwelling is far away,
So your memory consoles me despite the home’s distance
And in my heart, fear of parting from you leaves me lonely.
Yet fear of separation from you saddens me in my heart
أَشكوI complain إِلىto اللَهِGod مِنكُمfrom you نِيَّةًan intention فَصُحَتbecame eloquent
لَكِنbut حَوالَةُthe referral of آماليmy hopes عَلىto لُكُنِthe tongue-tied
I complain to God of an intention of yours that spoke eloquently;
I complain to God of an intention made pure
Yet my hopes are referred to the tongue-tied.
But my hopes are pinned on your gentleness
وَقَدand indeed أَتانِيَhas reached me تَوقيعيmy decree فَأَوقَعَنيand so cast me
فيinto أَسرِthe bondage of شُكرِgratitude for جَميلٍa kindness مِنكَfrom you أَطلَقَنيset me free
And the decree for me has arrived, and so cast me
And my missive came to me and made me fall
Into bondage to gratitude for a kindness from you that set me free.
Into grateful captivity to your kindness which released me
سَلِمتَmay you remain safe ماas long as جَمَعَgathers الميقاتُthe appointed time وَفدَthe pilgrims of مِنىًMina

May you remain safe as long as the appointed time gathers Mina's pilgrims,
You kept safe what the appointed time brought me
Slaughterers of sacrificial camels, scorchers of bodies.
Releasing my bodies and burning my body

If a man is immortalized by noble deeds, then none
When a man is immortalized by noble deeds, then none
But you can be that man among humankind—so be!
Other than you in this world can be, so be!
